During moderate acceleration from a stop, there is a somewhat tinny sound, which lasts between 1 and 3 seconds coming from possibly the tranny. The harder the acceleration the longer the duration. During a simple mild acceleration there is no sound. Any ideas what this is and if it can be corrected would be appreciated??
If its the noise I'm fairly sure you are referring to, its the dreaded 6 spd "rattle" that always happens when accelerating from a dead stop. Smooth, slow engagement of the clutch will reduce it dramatically, but in a normal take-off, it is always present. Also, if its the same noise I'm referring to, it should also happen while taking a slow turn in a higher gear than you would normally, kinda like your lugging the motor at a low RPM (when your lazy and take a slow turn in 4th gear, instead of 2nd or 3rd).
If this sounds like the noise you are getting, its considered "normal" and is just something you have to learn to live with....some cars are worse than others...my 6 Spd is a little noiser than my buddy's but even in his car you can still hear it. I went nuts with sound deadening thru out the car, and built a custom noise insultor out of wood where the shifter goes....replacing the fairly thin rubber isolater that is there from the factory.
All in all, the sound deadening and the extra noise reduction in the shifter area really helped reduce how much the "rattle" gets into the interior....not to mention made a big difference in the "road noise" that normally exists as well.
Thanks Tony for your input. I believe you are right on the money. The car is brand new with only 300 miles. I've never owned a 6-spd C5 till now. I would have thought Chevrolet could have corrected this problem noise by now. I'm of course assuming it is an inherent problem in all 6 spd C5's. I'll either have to live with it or go back to an Auto, which I don't really care for. Thanks again.  :seeya
Also, it helps if you give it more gas than you are probably used to when taking off. I found that the noise happens mostly when you're trying to start slowly, like in a parking garage or in traffic. Try giving it a little more gas and you shouldn't hear the sound. After a while, you can find a happy medium between eliminating the noise but not giving so much gas that everyone thinks you're trying to race them.
Yep, common to all MN6 C5's. It's in the owner's video.
I swapped diff and tranny fluids to Redline last week and the grinding noise was reduced dramatically. I also found LOTS of metal flake (up to 2mm) in my diff oil.
