Default 2001 Ring problem new owner

Hi, I have just purchased my first Corvete, a 2001 Mag red 6 speedwith 25k mi, one owner, very well cared for orig tires. I had the car checked by local reputable GM dealer, clean bill of health. Checked history 3 minor issues no eng related.
I have read threads about a ring issue, how concerned should I be about this problem ? I really like the car plan to keep it garaged and hopefully for a long time. Thank you

welcome and I would not be concerned unless, of course, it's using a lot of oil. mine will need from zero to 1.5 quarts between 3k mile changes, depending on how hard it's driven.

Thank you for the quick reply, does it burn more if driven hard, generally I am a conservative style, not bogging eng but smooth. I have not noticed any oil loss so far, but will keep a close eye, would about 1 qt in 3k be considered normal ?

welcome from a relatively new, actively posting member.
i suggest you read hib halverson's article, which can be found, i believe, at the corvette museum website.
great choice of cars. from what i have seen here, the vast majority of 01's don't have a problem and you get the excellent active handling and hp as standard equipment.
congratulations! hope to join you in such ownership verysoon.

You didn't mention it, but the vast majority of the Vettes with oil consumption issues tend to be the M6 (stick shift) cars. Seems the stick boys are more prone to tool around town in 2nd. @ like 3000 rpms to hear the exhaust noise. This no load situation can cause some problems.

The oil consumption issue is really not that big a deal, most '00 & '01 Vettes do not have this problem. If you haven't had to add any oil in like 3,000 miles - Don't sweat it!! Sounds like you bought a well taken care of, low mileage car.

ENJOY!!!

There is a service bulletin out on this problem. Its located at http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com. But.....it seems that some cars have this problem and some don't. My 01 seems to be behaving......for now. But it has used 2/3s of a quart in 1500 miles. FYI, I bought it used with 7709 and it now has 9340. Since I only drive my car on weekends, if I'm lucky....I can't really say what is normal, only what I've seen so far. I do like to "tach it up" on my occasional outings. Good luck with your new ride. :chevy

My 01 used a quart every 800 miles. Had the re-ring done. They say the rings flutter at about 3500 rpm especially under light load. If you run it up to high rpm as you go through the gears you will use more. If you shift earlier you will use less. I hear very few automatics are a problem because they shift at lower rpm.
