So, what temperature is considered too high for an A4?? Just curious so I know what to look out for. I was under the impression GM put a cooler in the cars, but it seems like everyone with a set of gears & t/c are putting them in.
Where & what price is good for an aftermarket tranny cooler.
Anything above 240 would be too high. A lot of forum vendors sell them . The average price is around $50. Have you looked into the transgo shift kit ( $109.99 ) it comes with one . So you get better shifts & a cooler tranny. Win/Win.
Any prolonged tranny temps above 210 cause the fluid to break down & start to degrade...tranny damage will eventuly result. Short term temps up to 240 are OK, but not for more than 5 or so minutes at a time. This guidline is what we use in drag racing.
A tranny cooler should keep you below 190 at all times. Mine runs 168-174...and we run this car hard.
Get a tranny cooler for sure! I had not seen the transgo kit include a cooler before, but there may be one.
I am trying to remember where I read the same  but I 'm pretty sure it was from a Forum Vendor. I just purchased one from ( LS1 Speed Inc. - Mike ) I went and checked it over there but no mention of items included in the kit. I am expecting the same within this week . :D I will tell you what I find inside if you will wait. Take Care. :seeya

I have it from a tranmission expert, who rebuilds trannys for a living, that he has almost never seen a transmission failure that wasn't caused by excessive heat. He said, as far as he is concerned, any temp above 190 is detrimental to tansmission longevity.
Ok V-8...... I'll wait to hear what's in the box. Are U going to perform the install yourself? Another forum member recently did a writeup with many EXCELLENT pix on the process, sure it's involved - But it's not like actually rebuilding the tranny!!
Will do. No I won't be doing it myself my car is at the shop right now getting ready for major surgery ( Engine has been opened up + tranny ) so I figured I will install the shift kit at the same time . :seeya

The automatic radiator has a built in tranny cooler. But if you're going to do TC/transgo you'll definately want to get a supplemental one. I installed a B&M 24000GVW cooler and never saw over 200 degrees driving hard in the Houston summer. Normal driving temps get up to about 185 with gears, converter and transgo.
I agree! If you're going to go with a higher stall TC you absolutely need to install an after market trans cooler to increawse your over all trans fulid cooling capacity. It would be very surprizing if the higher stall ratio TC didn't make your trans run hotter. This is due to the increased slippage which creates additional heat at lower rpm driving. You need to keep the trans fluid cool to avoid all kinds of trouble. I think most good trans shops will recommend a cooler along with the new TC.
I consider a transcooler a must when you have a high stall converter. On the few occasions that I was driving in city traffic before I installed the cooler my temp would climb to 225 after about 20 minutes with my SY3500.
I’m using the B&M 70264 transcooler. It is a stacked plate design, which is supposed to be more efficient than the tube and fin coolers. Combined with Andy’s HD radiator, the transmission temps are usually lower than 185 when the converter is unlocked. On occasion during 90+ weather and hard, country road driving I’ve seen the temps go as high as 204. The 70264 is rated at 2400 GVW and while it does the job most of the time, bigger would be better.
It works fine at the drag strip but on a road course it is entirely inadequate as the temp rises to 235. I’m going to replace it with the new 70274, which is about twice as big (11x11x1½). Here is a little more info from the B&M site: http://www.bmracing.com/products/acc...perCooler.html
