Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (The One)
Things I did were upgraded timing chain, oil pump an hardened pushrods, put in UD pulley and ported throttle body. Also, I went with bigger valves and dual springs.
Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (The One)
I replaced the timing chain with another OEM chain, a double roller would be nice...but I've been told that most of the time it's overkill. Also went with hardened pushrods and a ported oil pump.
Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (The One)
The Rollmaster double roller timing chain from Scoggin-Dickey is identical to the SLP unit and $100 cheaper. Chomemoly pushrods are a good idea as is a blueprinted oil pump. Most say that you can reuse the lifters but as I now have one that is sometimes reluctant to pump up when the car is started up cold, I wish I had replaced them

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Sounds like I should at least do the oil pump. I was replacing the timing chain with OEM, but I may upgrade to the Rollmaster now.

(JC) sounds like you are raising the bar on your hp.

Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (The One)
In addition to a blue printed oil pump, roller timing chain, and hardened pushrods, you should also strongly consider ARP Head studs and new lifters.
The factory Head bolts are junk after you torque them once. Therefore if the heads have to come back off for any reason, you have to buy new bolts again. Also the ARP have better clamping force and will help keep your head gaskets alive longer if you decide to go with forced induction later on.
Lifters are also pretty important. I had 50k on the odometer when I did my heads and cam. The lifters where perfectly fine with the stock cam. With the new high lift cam, one of the lifters was not pumping up all the way. This lead to another teardown. Also, it is rare with roller cams, but it is possible to flatten a new cam when not matched up to new lifters.
Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (The One)
I am getting ready to do the same thing, the main reason for the project is I seem to have a failed lifter on #8, or at worst lost a lobe on the cam.
At the minimum I am doing Cam(Comp 216/220 or 220/224), new lifters (CompCam 850-16), Underdrive Pulley(undecided on make), 28# injectors (bosch, stock after 2002 I think), double roller timing chain, ARP head bolts.
In addition, and if I can scrounge the money I am thinking about the following in order: 42# flow matched injectors(suggestions?), adjustable fuel pressure regulator, oil pump (suggestions?), ARP 12pt head studs.
And if I was just rolling in money, I would probably pick up one of those DeWitt radiators, but thats done later easy enough.
So we are nearly in the same boat. Scoggin-Dickey is a pretty good place to get the meat of the project. If anyone has suggestions on the other parts or purchase points, please post!
Re: What else should be done while doing Heads/Cam? (lost)
How about an underdrive pulley?
Check. :D That's already on the list.
I've decided to port the oil pump, go with new lifters, a RollMaster double roller chain and ARP head bolts. Staying away from the hardened pushrods for now in an effort to buy a little insurance against missed shifts. ;) I'd rather bend a pushrod than a valve! Work starts in the morning! Thanks for all the feedback guys!
