I have owned an LS1 for about 2.5 years. I always have wondered what the major difference is and keep forgetting to ask:). For example, why is it that you can take both heads, give them the EXACT SAME port job, and the LS6 heads always produce at least 20 more at the wheels. Can you convert LS1 heads to LS6 heads? Thanks!
Diff head configuration, they are not cut from the same cloth so to speak, if you look at a set of each they do not have the same combustion chamber design and the ports are diff--the new AFR heads have a combustion chamber that is diff yet, its a kind of figure 8 config for superior combustion.
Combustion Chamber Vol. : 66.67 cc
Compression Ratio : 10.1:1
Intake Port Vol. : 200 cc
Exhaust Port Vol. : 70 cc
Intake/ExhauSt Valve : 2.00/1.55 inches
2001 + LS6 5.7 Head ( Cars )
Combustion Chamber Vol. : 64.45 cc
Compression Ratio : 10.5:1
Intake Port Vol. : 210 cc
Exhaust Port Vol. : 75 cc
Intake/ExhauSt Valve : 2.00/1.55 inches
The LS6 head is essentially a tuned-up LS1 head. The combustion chamber is slightly smaller and more efficient than the LS1. This increases compression, shortens burn times , & ultimately means less timing advance is required to produce the same power. Thus the LS6 heads produce more TQ. The exhaust port is a unique D Shape that improves flow.

Can the LS6 heads be swapped onto an LS1 engine as is?
:yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
:iagree:
Just depends on what your goals are compression ratio wise & how big is your wallet $$$. For example : If you want to go Supercharger or Turbo the +01 LQ4 ( 6.0 L Truck ) head is an excellent choice since it drops the CR to about 9.1:1 Set your goals upfront then work & mod based on them. Then you have the GM racing heads . Ahh choices choices . Good Luck.

I thought that I recalled reading that there were some differences between the cams/valves between the LS1 and LS6 which would cause you to replace more than just the head/valves...in short, will the LS6 heads/valves work OK with the LS1 camshaft?
All GEN 3 heads are interchangable. You can just drop them in . Nothing else needs to be changed. Even Valve sizes are same. It is like the LS6 is an LS1 Ver. 1.5 :jester
Note :Except the C5-R heads which were designed with a different intake manifold. I don't think however that any of us would be considering the same anyway. $$$
