When I turn the air conditioner up high my fans are loud also.I would think its normal. The fans are turn at a rather high revolution.Try turning the fan down and see if that quiets the fans.If so,than its just the RPM's.Nothing to worry about. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
I just checked again, and I'm sure it's not the fans. It's either the compressor or condensor. It's the pulley with a fan belt on the passenger side of the engine, and is small.
Yes there is a lubricate that is installed with a recharge...however, it is a minuscule amount and my 02 is that the lube will not cure your noise.
If you are sure it is under your hood and it is your compressor and not a belt tensioner (notorious for noise) your compressor may have worn its bearings and you need a replacement.
Check your belt and brackets for alignment upon assembly as mis-alignment will cause premature bearing failure.
The compressor clutch went out on my 99 and caused a terrible sound. It was a metal on metal grinding present only during compressor cycles. This is the easiest and cheapest fixed. The clutch was $30 from a local parts store and did not require removal of the compressor or recharging of the system. You will need a compressor clutch removal/installation tool.
Just thought of one more point to make on the clutch. Clutches do go bad with age, but they can also be an indication that something else is wrong. If the compressor has internal damage then it will become hard to turn and will wear the clutch out. My AC was still working despite the noise so I felt it was worth the gamble to try the $30 clutch before replacing a $350? compressor.
I cant recall hearing one firsthand, but I believe the compressor will make a noise similar to crushing gravel untill it eventually siezes.
The pulley bearing is spinning even if the AC is off, so if the noise does not go away when you turn off the AC then this is your culprit.
