World's most stupid column lock problem. Any ideas?
I installed the column lock bypass on my 99 in 2001 with no problems for a couple of years. Meanwhile I had the car in for service and, without asking, they performed the campaign fix for the column lock problem. I figure I'm just double protected. Then after a couple of years with no problem, I started getting the 'Pull Key Wait 10 Sec' message. It got so consistent I took the car in, and they said it was a relay. They replaced the relay and I didn't the the message again for a couple of months. Tonight, I drove the car and got the 'Pull key, wait 10 sec' message. I complied and drove the car about 15 miles and next time I tried to start the car, I got the 'pull key wait 10 sec' I did that and then got "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" message. Obviously, I can't service the column lock because the column doesn't lock. However, I'm worried that if this happens again, a sensor may think the column is indeed locked and not let me drive the car. Any ideas?

Well, from what I remember some of the old bypasses didnt work so well with recall-fix'd cars. The new ones all seem to.
If you are worried about getting stranded somewhere, just carry the T-15 torx driver with you so if it ever does it, you can remove the bypass and hook up the stock wiring harness and drive it like that. Chances are one or the other is gonna work.

There have been other posts about how dealers have removed CLB devices and tossed them in the trash, without the owners permission or even knowledge sometimes. Are you sure that your CLB is still installed after the dealer did the recall?
If not, go back to the dealer and demand that they replace it. :smash:
If yes, go back to the dealer and demand that they remove the 'improvment' that they put in without your permission.
Either way, your dealer fixed a problem that wasn't there, and now YOU have to deal with the results!

After they said they had done the campaing, I asked them why, because I had already told them I had the bypass. They called the mechanic up and he said he didn't know anything about a bypass. I'll peek under the steering column when I get home to see if my bypass is even still there. If no, it's gonna get ugly. Meanwhile, the dealership that found the 'bad relay' is not the same dealership I was originally dealing with. After grease on my seats, a pair of $160 Oakleys stolen out if the car when it was in their care, and other issues, I stopped dealing with the original dealer that did the campaign. I'm still under the Major Guard plan, so that's a little consolation.
