In responce to other posts, I stated that I was not 100% happy with the performance of the A4 in my 2001 or my current 2003. I have read in a lot of posts that a LS1 Edit tune, Preditor, etc. would adjust transmission response(Quicker/Harder shifts). This being done electronically. I have also read that a TransGo shift kit was the way to go. I have just left the TransGo web site and it appears that the TransGo kit is a bunch of springs, plates, and other components, that I certainly would not attempt to install. The confusion is, if I eventually will have to do a LS1 Edit tune, our similar, Why would I spend $100.00 on a mechanical kit, and another $100.00 on installation to fix my A4 problem. Am I missing something here??????
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (Rons2ndC5)
You do one or the other.
Now I know there are those that will argue this point, but using a shift kit on a modern, electronically-controlled transmission is taking a giant step backwards. It's using stone-age technology on a space-age tranny. Get someone to adjust your tranny via LS1-Edit or do it yourself with it or one of the handheld units, the Predator being one of the best.
It's what the majority of C5 A4-equipped owners do. :)
The edit is infinetly adjustable and reversable.
The Trans-go type kits are not easy to adjust and vertuly impossible to revert back to stock. On some kits ***** are swedged into passages in the shift body passages to change line pressure.
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (ROADAPPLE)
With the transgo, you have to manually move the shifter from 1 to OD. With LS1 edit, you can set your shift points and firmness--this makes a HUGE difference. If you change the gearing and do this, it is a night and day difference. Trust me. It's a very good mod with the A4. If you plan to get powermad, beef it up before putting a high stall on it.
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (blown in n.c.)
you are gonna have some heat on this one :yesnod: :yesnod:
Electronic -- user specific adjustibility. Readjustible to driver from cockpit. While settings maybe considered somewhat limiting, they are within the limits you'll want anyways. Go back to stock immediately !
Manual -- Firmer shifts are based on three settings. Soft, Street, Strip. You are going to increasure pressure substantially with larger openings, tighter springs but you cannot revert back. If settings are to rough you need to pull pan, dump fluids, and repair. (Messy and costly)
In a modern electronically controlled automobile, it would appear to me that I made the right choice with the Predator. That said, if I was looking for an all out race car or strip terror, I would not hesitate for the Transgo.
I have done both , Corvette has Predator, and previous Ram Air T/A had Transgo. And contrary to what was said above, you can drive both in Drive/Overdrive. On both 1st gear will not shift automatically anymore, so you will learn to move quickly or bounce off the rev-limiter. (not good)

Interesting. I recently had a 3.42 gear installed, and I'm using Predator. Doing WOT from a stop, it hits the rev limiter before shifting into 2nd. Very annoying. I thought that I hadn't specified the shift points right. Is there any workaround, or do I have to lift my foot a bit to get it to shift into 2nd?
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (Rons2ndC5)
Ron,
I would guess you don't like the soft 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. If you tune with Edit you will make the 1-2 shift very firm compared to the other shifts. The feature I like about Transgo is if you install 1 shim and drill the proper feed hole sizes you can get each shift to feel equal. You can then use Edit to firm up more if you like. If you go with more than 1 shim you can't easily go back.
Mine feels slightly firm around town, but shifts very fast at higher throttle positions.
Suggest you ride in a car that has done Edit only. You make like banging 1-2.
GTC, Who did you get your predator from? If you have not done so yet contact them and tell them about the gear change. For now they will have to send you a file to update the gear scaling. I had the same problem when I first put in the 3.73s. This should be fixed in the 1.04 ver of predator. Mine shifts great now. (Thanks James!!)
:D
Rons2ndC5, Get the Predator and you will be able to change your fans, adjust timing, fuel, gears (with update) and other things. Also you can monitor some stuff real-time. The next update will have some new features also, which will make it even better. :)
Go here for more info. James is a great guy and will help you get it right. http://www.runninwiththedevil.com/
I have only increased my pressures with LS1 Edit and other than hitting a little harder than I would like from 1st to 2nd at very low speeds, in all other situations it works perfectly with nice quick smooth shifts.
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (sweetcharity)
It is easy to fix that in Predator, it has settings for low speed (normal) and performance (WOT) quickness and firmness for each 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 4.

You need to have your shift points adjusted. They're incorrect for the new gears.
GTC, I've just went through this with my 3.42 and the Predator. I don't have my settings right in front of me now. EMail me and I will get them to you.
A little off the subject.......a year ago you all were talking about the P0748 code.............I have now............I have a TransGo kit, LS1 edit programming,
The code started when a "Programmer" set up my tranny to lock in 2nd and 3rd. Where should I look first?
Thanks,
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (Rons2ndC5)
I have the Predator and have switched from 273 to 342. It works extremely well at modifying the shift points, presure and shift speed. With little bit of experimenting, I'm certain you can get it just as firm and quick or soft and slow as you like.
Re: A4 confusion---Enlighten me please (Mike Mercury)
I just went through this. Get the proper program from Predator, Johan can email it to you. With some minor adjustments, you will be very happy with the trans / shift points / firmness / timing of shifts, etc.
