Did you remove the springs that Hurst puts in from the factory and use the two weakest springs (inner and outer spring?)? Did anyone use only one spring? Give me your thoughts on what everyone did.
Thanks. :)
Factory setup w/ the two allen screws loosened one full turn. You can loosed or tighten them one full turn. Tightening makes them stiffer and loosening makes thm softer.
I removed the springs that came with my Hurst shifter and installed the lightest springs in the set. I found the lateral forces with the original springs to be unacceptably high.
That's what I did for now. I used the lightest outer spring. I will see how that feels and adjust from there if needed. I put the retaining screws in 3 1/2 turns using Locktite.
Right now I have one light outer spring per side.....Perfect for me
Same here, plus I backed off about one turn. Just be sure to use Loc-Tite on the threads.
I used the heavy springs inside and outside. At first it
shifted a little hard. After you drive it for a week it feels
comfortable, at least it did for me.
I tried the lightest springs on both sides at first but found that the shifter would rattle or vibrate a bit so I put the heavy spring back in on the passenger side so that it would be easy to shift into reverse.
It still seems a little wierd that you can lift the lever up but as long as it doesn't rattle I'm good.
BTW, be very very careful removing those screws so you don't drop them into the tunnel!
I lost one that way and had to buy a new one at the local Ace hardware.
Good advice. Thanks. I think I will try the lightest "outer" springs alone at first and see how it feels. If that doesn't feel good I will play around with the various springs.
