Someone I know was asking about putting a converter in his A4 car. I don't follow the automatic conversation on here alot, so I wanted to ask folks with experience wha their opinions are. I don't know if the car has 2.73s or 3.15s. My understanding is that the owner would like to do bolt ons (headers, airbox, etc...). the owner wants the car drivable, and would like to see about a second drop off his ETs. Off the top of my head I recommended a zip tied box with the front screens removed, LGM long tubes, a 3.73 gear, and a SY3500 (and of course tuning).
Would the A4 guys recommend 3.42s or 3.73s
What converter SY3500 with 3.42 or 373 , or a 2.1STR Yank 3000 with 3.15s, or some other combo.
I'm not trying to start any converter wars, it just the search feature doesn't give me good hits, so I just wanted to ask the question and get some current answers. I just want to make sure I am giving him good advice.
I have had 2 set-ups in my A4 C5. I had 3.15's and Yank 3000 and the car ran great and the streetability was amazing. Felt nice and tight and crisp. No real drawback for daily driving IMO. It was a good solid hit off the line but everyday driving was not really affected at all, i.e. loose, using more gas pedal to get the car moving, etc.
I have also had 3.42's and SY3500. This combo is pretty amazing but it is slightly loose. Meaning, the rpms will get a bit higher to get the car moving. The STR on the SY3500 is lower than the Yank 3000 which makes it an amazing streetable TC IMO. Don't get me wrong, you can roast the tires pretty easily with the SY3500 but it will require a bit more gas pedal for everyday driving.
IMO, I really like the 3.42's and SY3500. I'm not a HUGE track guy so it was good enough for me the few times I did go. If he wants to save some money, keep his 3.15's and get the Yank 3000. It is an amazing TC and will most likely not require an additional tranny cooler. It will give him more than enough torque IMO. I would however get an additional tranny cooler for the SY3500....just my opinion.
I think one more thing to consider is a TransGo shiftkit. This kit will make the up and down shifts lightning fast, crisp, and virtually no drop in rpm's between shifts. I loved mine!
Both AWESOME combos really. Not sure if I answered any questions actually  Hope it helped a bit.
Im in same boat as your freind . Im changing my 273 . I was set on getting
ss3600 with 373's .I read a post from IXLR8 who just got 342's with no converter and said he wouldn't get one ( tires would spin too much). If you GO back a couple days you will find it in general discussion .
Is 342'S good enough to get in low to mid 12's? What about yank st3500?
I now have the money but don't know which combo to buy.
If he is going to do more track duty, I'd say go more gear so 3.73. The converter if he is going to do more track duty and was leaning toward Yank I would say Super Thruster (ST) 3500 or the SS 3600.
Add the sticky rubber, airbox and the tuning, and he should see about a second
Of course if he is going to be serious track duty, 4.10s, and a 4400 stall converter with a cam and he is deep in the 11's, like me:D
i have the st3500 and i get low 1.60's e z, i added the st3500 and 3.42's and went from 13.004 to 12.40's i allmost lost my mind. its a great mod, my best ever. if i was doing a t/c /gear change i would go with the yank ss3600 or ss3800 i have heard they are the best. good luck :yesnod:
If he is going down the mod road, take him directly to the endgame where he wants to be for a daily driver/street/light strip A4. SS3600 or SS3800 with 3.42 or 3.73 gears. The Y3000 is not a satisfying long term solution. The SS converters are very tight and drive about the same as the Y3000. I would not recommend the SY3500 due to the looser around town aspect. With this coventer/gears combo, headers, CAI of choice, cat-back, drag radials, and tuning he should be low to mid-12s. Add a reasonable cam (224/114) and possibly 11s. Don't do like I did and get too mild a converter, and then have to upgrade later! Good luck.

I just had the SS3600 with 3.42's great combo, very streetable, and great performance.
i just upgraded to an SS4000 and it dosen't drive as good as my SS3600, but I am still on the break in period and driving it like an old lady. The SS3600 is a better choice than the SY3500 if you want better performance and better i.e. TIGHTER pedal feel and responsiveness.
The only draeback might be traction on street tires, but al you have to do is use less gas to solve that problem.
I agree with Buckmaster
I have the sy3500 trans-go and 3.42 gears
Its great on the street
A little sluggish moving around town under 2500 rpm
6 months ago we were all getting sy3500 for the street now we have all moved up to the ss3600-3800 and the track guys run even more 4400
I think Vince is turning us into mod alholics like himself.
I kind of wish I would have gone with the 3.73 and the ss3600 and I really don't go to the track with the c5.
I ran 12.89 with my setup and headers with runflats.
What I have is good for now .

Re: Converter Question from an M6 guy (2001 Red Coupe Bandit)
So from what I have read, it sounds like the SS3600 and a 3.42 are the way to go. Do many folks run 3.73s, or is that too much gear? Is the SS3600 made by Yank?
J- Rod
I "m not trying to steal your post ,but your getting all my questions answered.
Thanks.
Looks like 373s and ss3600 for me.
Next mod will be tires . More O.T. at work. :(
Thanks guys
greg
If he gets ET Streets he can go 3.73 and SS3600.
With BFG DR's the SY3500 and 3.42's will make him happy, but don't know if he can get traction with 3.73's.
I have the SS3600 and 3.42's. If I had to do all over again, the only change I would have made was to go witht he 3.73's. Do not get me wrong, overall the 3.42's are great and I have even been able to muster a 1.59 60' with this combo. However, I think the addition of 3.73's would have tightened up the feel a bit.
Regardless of what he gets, if he is looking to drop his ET's he should be looking at the SS line along with a good set of tires.
My everyday tires are a set of BFG KDW's traction can be an issue on the street, but you learn where the limits are pretty quick. At th etrack I am running ET Streets and once getting a feel for them, I have been able to steadily reduce my times.. You were at the shootout when I ran a 11.368, though I also have LGM's G5X-2 and Stage 2 Heads. However, I think the combination of 3.73's and a SS3600/SS3800 will get him very close to the 1 second reduction in ET's he is looking for.

Re: Converter Question from an M6 guy (J-Rod)
JROD:
Have him step up to the plate with 3.73s (perfect for a4 with aggressive stall) and the converter i am running and RWHITE (the fasteset heads/cam stock cubed A4-10.70s at 124 mph) that being a Yank ProThruster 4000, which flat out ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (on both the street and strip)
