Default Please help!!! I have a question about a wire we cant identify

Ok, I'm reassembling the front end of the car by putting in the radiator, electric fans, radiator support etc....I noticed a wire coming off a main wiring loom...its actually two wires an orange wire and a black wire wrapped together with what seems to be a severed end since i see copper wiring coming out of the ends of them. This wiring loom and wires in question are located by the passenger side fog light/horns. The wires are about 8 inches in length and wrapped together with black tape. With the radiator support in place you wouldnt be able to see this area unfortunately for me. Does anyone have a clue where this wire(s) got to?? Could they possibly just be accessory type wires which arent used??? Please help.....I"m losing sleep frettin' about this deal. Thanks in advance, Eric

I have no idea, but "wrapped together with black tape" sounds like maybe an aftermarket job?

Good luck on this one.

I should have been more specific. The "black tape" is the factory type black tape that comes off some factory wire looms. Thanks,Eric

I was planning on putting my '01 Coupe on the ramps later today, I'll take a peek and see if I can find them.

Those are the wires that supply your underhood light. They are supposed to go to a connector that is mounted next to the air box, about half way up on the passenger side. I would guess that the bare wires you see were pulled straight out of the connector. If you just find the wires coming out of the hood light and butt-splice them together you should be fine. FYI, the wires that come out the other end of the connector and go to the light are both black.

Just a note of caution, your Air Bag wires run through that same area as well. I had mine apart to replace the skid bar assembly. Can't remember the wire colors, but they all run in that same main loom on the passangers side. Be very careful around that air bag trigger sensor, or you will be doing a very expensive interior clean up! I may bell be the underhood light or horns.

Good catch I forgot all about that one! And that one has given me trouble, I had to change the sensor. Is that a orange wire?

OK, anyone who doesn't have the automatic HVAC controls won't have the outside ambient air temperature sensor, so they might have a loose connector in the area that Eric found the loose wires. However, those wires are supposed to be Light Green w/Black stripe and Gray w/Black stripe. ;)

About 6" from the where the air temp sensor wires sit, there is another pair of wires, one Black and one Orange, that supply power to the underhood light. :D

I don't think C5's have air bag sensors in the bumpers, but if they did the wires would most likely be Yellow. I'm pretty sure that C5's use an accelerometer/computer combination under the radio to deploy the air bags. :smash:

Since Eric described the mystery wires as Black and Orange, my $ is on the underhood light. :hurray:

And the winner is..............

Nope, the airbag sensor is on the bottom of the front cross member right under the center of the hood. Just don't bang it by accident, as it is a one time deal. If you hit it hard enough?? I have had mine out, as I had to remove the harness to get the front Skid Bar assey. out and replaced. On the driver side you have the AIR mount and harness and on the passanger side the loom holds the temp probe, horns, airbag sensor, and hood light. And they all twist around that bar so that you have to disonnect them to replace the dam thing!

It is not under the radio!

I do my own work, even some of the heavier lifting stuff.

Thanks so much to you all for your research and comments. Mark was correct in his diagnosis of the under hood light wiring assembly. The temperature probe sensor had different colored wires but was at least another good idea of something to check. I fixed everything and all is good again. Thanks again, Eric

 Glad I could help Eric!

BlueDragon.....It appears we were BOTH right about the airbag sensor. My '01 Service Manual doesn't ever mention a front mounted trigger, but my '97-'01 parts CD shows a sensor mounted right where you said it would be on pre-'99 C5's. It looks like the rest of the system stayed pretty much the same, only no sensor on the front bumper after '98. I guess they determined that the accelerometer was good enough.
