Anyone have issues with 1st to 2nd shift in their C5's? Mine has always felt a little stiff since it was new, I figured over time it would break-in so to speak... but it seems to be getting worse, it's even popped back out twice me, makes me very wary about 1st to 2nd shift off the line ... speed shifting is next to impossible, it feels like I am abusing it, all other gears are fine. Lugging it around it slips in fine though. I'm giving her a tune up in a couple weeks including changing *all* fluids... I'm hoping this will help out. Could this be the clutch not disengaging all the way or maybe a synchro or gunk buildup in the tranny? opinions?

Re: MN6 2nd gear shift (solarisjedi)
No problems with my 2nd gear shift. Sounds like maybe the syncros. Find a good transmission shop and see what they think. If under warranty, find a good dealer to look at it.
I've taken it to 2 dealers when it was still under warranty, they said it was fine
I just wanted to see if anyone had similar issues since this is the first vette I've owned/worked on. If the fluid change doesn't help I may check my linkage for adjustment and go from there. If it turns out to be a synchro I guess I'll get to have my first experience tearing into a c5 tranny :D .... oh wait I wasn't supposed to sound giddy there was I? heheh
I had this same problem in my hardtop. I changed the fluids to redline and it helped out ALOT. It would still do it sometimes and every once in a while it would pop out so i took it to the dealer. He said it was out of alignment so they adjust it and it was fine. Kaley
Mine has "popped out" before or more to the tune that I have grinded it on a very few occasions also. I have even missed the shift while drag racing often. It is normal, or at least I thought. As far as I know the throw to second is a distance, and it is possible it takes a split second longer to engage. I have found that going a little higher in the rev department between shifts helps.
Now I am sure a better transmission oil will improve it but possibly shorten its lifespan.
Thanks for the replies. I'm feeling more confident now that this is a combination of something out of adjustment and needing a fluid swap. I agree with Dope on the synchro's, that does make sense, since this is more of a bind than a grind :)
I have a 98 that has the same problems from time to time. Mine also has a hard time going into first when it's acting up. I was going to try swapping the fluid, but I haven't got around to it yet. I was thinking maybe a bent shift fork or something, but the problem is going to have to get a lot worse before I go pulling out the tranny.
Mine has always been a bit reluctant when the transmission is cold but its never popped out of gear. I put Redline D4ATF in the gearbox about a year ago and it made it marginally better, but no big difference.
