I would suggest that you get an aftermarket air cleaner like the Donaldson. It is the one item dollar for dollar that delivers a good performance boost. I then would second the recommendation for an LS1 edit by a good tuner. Make sure you install the aircleaner before the LS1 edit. These are the two most effective things you can do and still remain a stock car. Once you have the edit, your shift points will be adjusted to deliver maximum power and you can just leave it in drive and concentrate on the reaction time. Make sure you turn off your traction control before each run.
Re: Automatic guys I need some help (Mike Mercury)
I have pondering the same question for some time now. Like Mike said it does feel sometimes that putting it in 3 gives you a later shift but then again sometimes the D setting feels more powerful  either way always put in Competition Mode. :steering: :yesnod: . Tell you what since you are going to the track you will have the best oppurtunity to find out for us. Try all combos.
1- D
2- 3
3- Manual Shifting
leave it in 3rd gear and let her fly, you should see some 13.30's104MPH TO 13.50'S. ADD some type of cold air intake and drop 3 or 4 tenths easy, good luck. :yesnod:
OK here's your answer, In manual 1st gear you bring on an addtional clutch pack so your running through the forward clutch and the low/reverse clutch instead of just the forward clutch and sprag.
This will give greater holding capacity in 1st gear (not required unless you have slicks).
Manually shifting will in no way harm your trans, however I doubt you will be as consistant as the computer is.
The PCM looks at RPM, throttle position and road speed to determine shift points so no matter what gear you leave it in they will be the same at WOT.
Since the converter has a fixed position stator the launch will be the same in all gear positions.
So I would just take your pick and go from there, personally I use OD and let the computer do the work.
Road racing is a different story though. :)
Thanks for the help guys. The track opens Jan 17th and I plan on being there that week it opens. I'll try it in D for the first run and see how that works out. I do know for sure that in OD the car will not rev to 6000 rpm before shifting. Looks to be shifting somewhere around 5,700-5,800 rpm.
As far as air intakes go which one provides a decent performance gain verus ease of installation? Noticed the BPP Vortex in ecklers looks like it may be a good one.

Been there and Done that...:yesnod: If you only want to do the intake once ...do it right the first time ..Go with a VARARAM !! :yesnod:  www.vararam.com
Put it in "3" - you do not want a shift into Overdrive, Launch from Idle (895 - 1000 RPM MAX), TURN OFF AH & TC you can't do a burnout with them on, Leave when you see the THIRD YELLOW LIGHT, Just put the gas to th floor don't SLAM IT DOWN, If the rear ends "walks a little bit" slightly turn the wheel IN THE DIRECTION THE REAR END IS GOING.
I ran the Blackwing, the Vararam, and The Breathless Rammer and if you go on the Breathless website you can see my times with each bolt on modification. Each intake is good and will perform well; however, each will react a bit different to your setup as you add modifications. You can look at my signature to see which one I am still running at 10.88/127MPH
I will be going with the Blackwing and the Vinci Air Box with the new 427CI C5-R motor due to the boost increase to 12 lbs.
Good Luck and be SAFE!

PS - Don't shift manually, GM programs in a delay for each manual shift, so you will only loose time with no positive benefit, we've all tried it!

:iagree:
Except for the AH part, you can do a burn out with AH turned on. Hold the button down for 7 seconds and the DIC will indicate competition mode, in this mode AH is still active and will keep the car pointed straight but traction control will be disarmed allowing the rear tires to spin.
I always shift to "3" if I leave it in OD I can pretty much guarantee on adding .3 or .4 to my time.
In a 2000 C5 4L60E if you try to do a burnout with AH on the fuel will shut off until traction is resumed - that may be different in later years. My experience is that turning off TC & AH leaves the ABS on and nothing else.
