I have a 1997 C5 M6 and it cut out around 150-155mph during a WOT run (not sure exactly what speed, I had my eyes on the road). Rpms dropped to zero, and I just coasted to a stop thinking I had blown the motor or something. Motor started up again just fine, drives fine, sounds fine, heck - this happened over 4 months ago... I'm just curious why it happened.
I was in 5th gear. Not sure on the rpms but it wasn't redlining, I'm positive about that. I know what banging off the rev limiter is like and that wasn't it. It just cut dead, like someone turned the ignition off.
There is no speed limiter. However, even if there was it wouldn't work the way you describe. You have some sort of electrical problem. It will happen again under the right conditions and the engine may not restart the next time.

:iagree: get it checked out, but depending on where you go you might want to leave out the fact that you above 150mph when it happeneed
There is a speed limiter and I no one guys car would hit it at 178mph. When you do H/C the tuner disables it. :yesnod:  If i'm wrong please correct me! :yesnod: :seeya
I heard the C5 has a stock limiter at 176 mph and the Z06 has a stock limiter at 171 mph. I don't know if this is true or not, but thats just what I heard.
Personally I've run into speed limiters and rev limiters and none of them work that way.
They shut the fuel down until you drop below the threshold and then it turns the fuel back on.
So what you get is a surge feeling.
Maybe it was someone warning you...

Nope.
C5: drag limited with stock HP
Z06: gearing limited with stock redline
KillerVette99, if you take it to the dealer, just tell them it happened when you were accelerating briskly in 2nd gear. :D If you go to a tuner, tell them the truth to help them figure it out.
