"If you are not drag racing then the gears are a waste as soon as you get out of 1st gear."

This is why Im still undecided on the 4.10s. A car w/ 4.10s traps lower and is slower from a roll. Unless its at a small window of mph. A 3.42 geared car will be in a lower gear (2nd vs 3rd) and will therefore be faster than the 4.10 car.
You get more torque multiplication through the whole rpm band with 4.10's over 3.42's (again, use my spread sheet above, plug your numbers and see for yourself the relationship), You develop more thrust (thus g-force) at every rpm with 4.10's over 3.42's. Comparing shifting into a lower gear with a 3.42 as opposed to 4.10's is an incorrect assumption. its not a direct relationship.

thrust may be greater within the same gear, however as soon as you shift, the car with the lower numerical final drive will start pulling back (until it shifts). You are right that with two cars in the same gear, the short geared final drive will produce higher acceleration through the RPM range. However this will NOT be true throughout the speed range.

A race between two cars with identical powerbands, one with shorter gears then the other, will look like a see-saw battle with the shorter geared car pulling ahead, the taller geared car pulling back. The main advantage that shorter gears have is that the engine gets to spend more time at or near peak power (i.e. 4 times instead of 3 if crossing the line at the top of 4th instead of 3rd). This basically allows the engine to generate more power in a given period of time, which usually translates into greater overall acceleration.

Drako. I do see what your saying with respect to MPH. However at a given MPH (comapring 3.42's to 4.10's), there is not a lot of difference at the 3.42s best point of advantage at higher MPH, when for example, in 1st gear at 6000 rpm with 3.42's there is a .660 G force at 52 MPH. Where with the 4.10s at 52 at 4000 rpm (requring it to be in 2nd) is at .615 g's. Overall, the 4.10's are pulling much more at more rpms RPM's. In a quarter mile run, the only disatvange, would be the time to shift one more time (depending on rev limiter setting). The thrust overall at the end of the run would be far more with the 4.10's getting you there much quicker than 3.42's. The only mathamatical loss with 4.10's is pure top speed when you run out of tranny gears relative to HP and or wind resistance.

WOW!!!!! Thanks for the advice everyone!!! I have a tranny leak I just discovered today when I had it on the lift while I was installing my Borla Stinger... So I went ahead and installed the magnaflow x-pipe for the time being, so look for a used x-pipe for sale in about a month...... Since the trans has to be pulled, I am going to have the dealer install a new heavy duty clutch, and 4.10's with hardened output shaft for now... I have a GM extended warranty, so I am hoping I can just "trade" the differentials and not be charged the outrageous amount that I was quoted before. I will get the LG longtubes, but it will probably have to wait about a month. Thanks again everyone!!!!
