Default Gears and Forced Induction....

I plan on keeping my 99 6spd for a longtime... In the short run, I want to get in on the DTE rear gear special.... in the long run I hope to add forced induction... ATI on Magnuson...

I'd like some feedback on gear ratio selection.... I want some bang for my buck but I don't want gears that will be a poor fit with forced induction... Will I get a kick out of 3.73s alone, will 3.90s be my best balance, are 4.10s to much??? I've read traction is a major issue with the stock 3.42s!

Might want to ask this question in the FI forum. I think most will agree that if you're looking for street performance and you're going FI, to keep the 3.42s or maybe 3.73's... 4.10's appear to be generally regarded as overkill on a street FI setup.

Luther,

I have 4.10 gears in my Z06, with the same 2.66 first gear 6-speed that you have in your Coupe. The 4.10 gear set gives you 19.8% more torque at the rear wheels in each gear, when compared to the stock 3.42:1 gear set.

Without forced induction I am able to smoke the tires with throttle tip-in anywhere under 35 mph.

The 4.10 does make your car extremely quick through 4th gear, where it tops out at 119 mph @ 6,500 rpm. Fifth gear tops out at 161 mph, and sixth gear hits 200 mph at 5,360 rpms if you have enough horsepower.

My plan is to also add a Vortech supercharger to my C5 in the future. When I do I plan on staying with the 4.10s.

Good Luck with your decision.

I have MN6 with ATI and 3.90's and love the set-up. Never used six gear before getting gear change, now 2000 rpm's in six gear is right on 80 mph. With anything over 450rwhp forget about worrying about traction in lower gears anyway. You'll have some but not much.

:iagree: I have the same setup with 390s and I think it drives better in all regards and 6th gear deff becomes usefull, at one time I was thinking of building the bottom and turning up the boost and I felt 390s would let me make the quarter without a 5th gear shift since I expected to run in the mid to upper 130's.

Pumba,

Gears our my next mod and I was going to go with 3:90's because I was told with the z's different transmission compared to the coupe, the 4:10's would be to much. Sounds like your happy with yours :flag

Didnt mean to hijack the thread!

The most important question is which supercharger do you really want, the peak torque numbers for an ATI come on later in the RPM band and 3.90 or 4.10's work well (depending on other mods of course), I have a Magnuson and I'm in the process of installing 3.73's. The peak torque for a Magnuson S/C is as soon as you step on it and I've been warned that 3.73's may be to much.

:iagree: I started with 3.73s and then added the Magnuson later. It's a nice combo with a 6-speed, but forget traction with any sort of street tire at any place in 1st gear. Second gear in the recent cold weather is also pretty lame in that I can break the tires (now F1 295s on Z06 wheels) loose fairly easily. This may sound fun and all, but going through tires fast is something you should know about in advance. Of course, staying in the throttle but just below tire spinning makes for a great pull around town.

I can't really say with the ATI, but in all events I think I wouldn't go any higher than 3.90s.

I have 4.10's ATI with 10psi and heads and cam. I love my 4.10's. I would never go with any other gear. It's nice to be able to blow off the tires at will in any of the first 3 or 4 gears, but when you learn to squeeze the throttle (still learning) you can manage to hook up and motivate like a mo' F---er. It makes alot more sense in the upper gears in lower RPM'd which is where you are alot of the time if it's a driver. just my .02
