Having problems getting the spark plug caps off?
I am trying to change plugs today and am having a hell of a time getting the spark plug rubber caps off? Can I just tug on them as hard as I want in order to unseat them from the tip of the plug? Should I turn and twist them to unseat them? The space is tight and I do not want to damage anything by just yanking them out if that can harm anything? Thanks for any help you can give me..................

You may have already done this, but try taking the coil packs off. It opens up more room to work. Or just try turning the boot a little before pulling. The wires come off the coil packs just like the plugs. Hope this helps.

May be a little late, but you need to twist the plug wires and then pull. When you put them back, put a little dielectric grease in the boots and they will come off next time. The grease is available at all auto parts stores. Get the big tube because this grease is the best stuff to put on all rubber parts to keep them soft and looking good. :seeya

Re: Having problems getting the spark plug caps off? (NEED FOR SPEED)
I am telling you I must be ignorant  I cant get those damn things off. It feels like I would break something if I pulled any harder. While we are on the subject of spark plugs.......what are the best plugs to use and why? I have a set of NGK TR6 plugs but NGK does not list the vette on applications for this plug?
My buddy John sold them to me and said to gap them at .035 however the OE gap is .05
Re: Having problems getting the spark plug caps off? (ccajun4real)
Cajun, go to Sears and get a spark plug removal tool. Looks like a pair of pliers, but has curved, insulated ends that you grip the boot with. As for the plugs, I think the TR-6 plugs are a colder heat range than stock replacement plugs. Those plugs are used for supercharged, high compression, spray. You can still use them. That is the reason he told you to close up the gap. I think that TR-55's are stock replacement,BUT not sure. Do a search, there has been a bunch of threads about plugs. Before I go, I am thinking of going to the dyno day in Charlotte. If I do,see you there! :seeya

cajun,
GM has come out with a new spark plug for C5s.
it has an iridium tip instead of platinum.
the gap has changed, it's .040
ACDelco part # 41-985 (12571164).

I feel your pain. Mine were JB Welded on there, I swear. Luckily, I bought a new set of MSD wires, so I just grabbed the old wires and pulled. It pretty much destroyed the wire, but I didn't care.
Like they mentioned before, remove the coil packs- especially n the driver's side. The number 7 plug is a real beotch. :smash:

Re: Having problems getting the spark plug caps off? (Umrswimr)
Dont mean to sound silly but what are the coil packs and how are they removed. I am just scared s&*tless I will mess something up. lol Where is a good place to get wires? Autozone? Thanks
Re: Having problems getting the spark plug caps off? (ccajun4real)
Forum vendors are the best place for wires. Then your local dealer parts counter. Advance and AutoZone don't tend to stock custom-fit performance wires for C5s in my experience.
#7 sucks, small hands help, and good wobble extensions/universal swivels are a help. And get a spark plug boot removal tool, like the man said. You can get them in several angles...

The coil packs are the square black plastic things that the other end of the plug wires connect to. On later cars (2000 maybe?) they are all mounted on a common bracket that is held to the engine block by 4 (or maybe 5) 'bolt-screws' (it's a screw about 2" long with the bolt head in the middle). You'll need a 10mm deepwell socket to get them out. There is 1 plug that connects to the packs at the top/center of the bracket, remove it and the 4/5 bolts and you'll have twice as much room to work on the plugs. BTW, a 5/8" plug socket with a single universal/swivel joint works great, and you can get it for $5 at autozone or advance.

Go get the MSD plug wires from Autozone, they are only $59.00 there, they wil have to order them but it only took one day for them to get mine. Any place else sells them for $79.00 +++
