To be brief: friend called and said his new base engine C-5 is running 230-235 on the heat guage in traffic. On the highway, it cools to 195. Dealer says that's normal. He doesn't believe it and the owners manual is no help.
He says the fans(s) don't come on until 230 degrees. Is this normal? Are the turn on's for the fans staggered depending on heat or do they both come on at the same time?
I had this happen on my daughters 2000 Camaro LS1. Checked the coolant and it appeared to be think like a jell. I replaced coolant and thermostat and this corected the problem...
My C5 will run up in the 220's in heavy traffice during the summer...
Fans do come on at 225. They should already be on if a/c or heater on. This seems a little hot unless idling in traffic or parked at sonic without a/c or heater on.
Okay, so do BOTH fans come on at 225 or does one come on sooner than that and then if it can't satisfy then the second one comes on? If the fans are staggered then I could understand the problem.
first, are you looking at the gauge or the drivers display?if you are looking at the gauge,it's not accurate to the display[gauge off about 8 degrees].both fans come on at 228 degrees[according to the display]and the gauge reads about 235 on my car[03 z06].both fans come on high at 234 degrees and the gauge is at 240.if you had a overheating problem, you would know because the car would go into overheat protection[ecm shuts down 4 cylinders in groups].just my.02
Program your fans lower.
And always check your front of radiator for debris that could obstrucked air.
If coolant is under 100k,then it's not that at all.
A sticky thermostate???
Just bought a new 2004 'Vette and joined this great forum. Hope I can be of some help here.
The Helm manual for my 2004 states that the low speed cooling fan is commanded on at 226 degrees F and off at 219 degrees F coolant temperature. The high speed fan is commanded on at 235 degrees F and off at 226 degrees F coolant temperature. When the A/C is on and coolant temperature reaches 185 degrees F, the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 35 mph.
This is why I always run the A/C when I'm driving in town, outside temperature permitting; it keeps things nice and cool under the hood. But that's not possible below about 37 degrees F, and I did once go to 220 degrees F while driving slowly up a 4000 foot mountain in 32 degree F weather. I did not like that! :mad
I encountered the same problem with my 2001 coupe driving in rush hour stop and go Dallas traffic. I took it to a local Corvette specialty shop where they put in a 170 degree thermostat and made an adjustment to the computer. Problem solved.
:iagree: Helm info is correct, one additional piece from Spring 2003 Corvette Quarterly Magazine states that C5 normal operating range is 200-210.
