I need some input on my header purchase. I've been looking at FLP's full system which comes with high flow cats, off road pipes and x pipe. Or KOOKS stainless steel with high flow cats. Both have 1 3/4 prim. 3 in. collecters and 2 1/2 in. cats.
I am going to do a h/c but not till next year. All my other mods are in my sig. The car up on jack stands ready to do the work. I am lowering the car 1in.
looking for your input and heip. THANKS
Love my FLP's but I'm sure the Kooks are excellent, plus they are SS. What I like about the FLP's is the flexibility to swap components. You can go with cats, ORP's or cutouts due to the quick-change setup of the system. If changeovers are not your cup of tea and you'll leave it be once it's installed then you need to weigh overall price and whether you want jet-hot coated mild steel or SS.
I'm planning on putting in some cutouts this spring so the FLP's were a natural for me. I got the insert pipes from FLP and the electric cutouts from McCord.
I also love my FLP's its nice to just change out from cats to "race pipe" and the quality and fitment was perfect. Also Mitch is a good guy to do business with and nothing is better then having an entire system that bolts together with no leaks, unlike some others i have used!!!
I chose LG,, Wanted stainless and might as well get the most power. I also got the cats since the car might as well be legal later down the road...They fit without much hassle,,,but are slip joint and cannot be removed in sections, but the clamps are easy to use and allow removal...the system looks great and cant wait to feel the POWER..I looked at others and spent the bigger bucks to get what I felt was the better choice,, I am sure the other brands offer good quality also,, I just felt LG was better....my 2 cents
I put KOOKS header system on my 2k 2 weeks ago, very nice power increase(its fast now) ,the KOOKS arent as overpriced & hyped up like the lg,it was an easy install for me,I got hooker coated headers on my 88 ,never again because the coating started to peel off 1 year after install ,from now on stainless steel is the way to go unless you like pullin your headers off to get recoated ,the money u save on that alone justifies goin stainless.
Anybody have any more insight.
How long will the coated header last? Uncoated headers rust quickly.
Although not on a Corvette, I bought a set of Edelbrock headers and had them coated by Swain back in 1986. I sold the car after 10 years, and the headers still were in great shape. In fact, I think they're still on the car!
I had coated headers on my streetrods for years,, tune is critical,,to lean and it gets to hot,, to rich and it get too hot,,,yup too hot...I have seen bad coating jobs form jet hot and other mfg that peel. I tried the high temp at home coatings folled the instructions correctly to see it bubble after I started the car. Tofeco coatings in michigan done it over and it has lasted 6 years and looks great. But I wanted stainless on the vette.. I would like to see a long tube set like LG with clamp style flanges like FLP ,,in stainless ..that would be cool....
Hey Ron, go with the Kooks hands down. I have been using TPIS on my own cars and they are starting to rust already. The Kooks are stainless steel and will last alot longer and look better after a few years. I Just bought a set of the Kooks to replace my TPIS headers. Good luck. give me a buzz if you have any questions.. :seeya
