Default Fuel Additive / Higher octane fuel....?

Just wondering what you guys use, and what is safe/ best to use.

I keep reading posts about people mixing 50/50 with normal & high octane. Where do you guys get this? The only thing I have found around me are octane boosters (STP, Outlaw....) and leaded gas that is high octane.

I only use Amoco 93 octane in my car, but even with that gas my car still gets "slight" knock from time to time around 3900 RPMs (ATAP data logs). Going to dyno for a baseline in a couple of weeks and would like to find some good fuel to make sure I dont have any KR.

TIA,
-Nick

If your car is stock and you have a knock" I would just find the problem because 93+ is more than enough octane. Octane above 95" would be of no use unless you run Nitrous or a S/C that has knock retard. There's not enough compression to burn the high octane gas like 100+ . Those additives is a waste of money in most cases.

:iagree: High octane does nothing but waste $$ unless you have a high compression motor. 93 is more than adequate for a stock LS1. Need to have your knock checked out.

If you have a knock/ping problem with 93+ octane, then you probably need to find out if you have the latest BCM/PCM flash program from GM (there was one that covered a knock/ping problem), or if you need to replace your knock sensor IAW with the GM TSB, or your vette needs the decarb process.
Try looking into these three before you waste your money on octaine boosters......................its a C5 not an F-16.

Guys when I say Knock I am talking about Knock Retard (not a sound). I have never had any pinging/detonation, and the timing curves/ O2 sensor readings look pretty typical for an '02+ Z. I dont think I have a Knock problem.

The car is an '03 Z (10.5:1 CR) with 3K miles. Most of the ATAP logs I have seen of '02+ Zs show slight KR around 3900-4200 RPM. We are talking about 1-2 deg of knock, and it does not happen all the time. It always happens in the exact same RPM range and KR returns back to 0 in the upper RPMs.

Is there a TSB out for knock sensors?

10.5:1 is a pretty high compression ratio, GM handled this with computer programming. These cars frequently go into low octane mode and pull timing, I have heard of gains as high as 5 RWHP by mixing in some 100 octane with pump 93??

You are getting close to peak torque when you are recording the kr, not unusual. Have you measured your A/F with a wide band. Could be you are lean and with a minor adjustment you'll not only make more power but in all liklyhood, eliminate the kr.

I am going in for a dyno in two weeks :) . Will get some wideband data from that. 02 readings stay in the .890-.910 range for the most part so I do not think it is going to be lean, stranger things have happened though. We will see.
