With many of the mods. that you guys have done, how do you get around the dreaded smog test? The test where they make you test your car on the rollers. Is it possible to have porting of the heads or different cams and pass the test? What is the most that can be done without failing the test? Any thoughts are appreciated. I hope that I didn't open a bad subject.

I'm from VA, where emissions are nearly as strict. I passed emissions on the roller without cats. Its all in the tuning. If you want my tuner info, lemme know. he's in CA :)

In CA, you have 2 hurdles. First is the visual inspection. If you have any equipment visible (headers, intake, etc.) that doesn't have a CARB EO (Exemption Order) number, you fail, so visible mods like LT headers or removing your cats won't pass, but reworked heads (no visible evidence)will. Then you get to pass the sniffer. This is where a good tune comes into. As I'm originally from SoCal and would like to move back, I've been keeping an eye on threads like these. It seems like a cam in the 220-224 duration range can pass the sniffer test with a decent tune. Any bigger and you would need a real wizard with LS1 edit to get passed the sniffer.
