Time for forged bottom end - 50K and #1 lost compression!
I just got a call from the dealer telling me that my #1 piston is not showing any compression and that it is causing the "blow-by" problem I related in an earler post. (Oil coming out of dip-stick).
I have an extended warrenty - but I'm not sure what they will cover yet. Does anyone have experience with this - will they just fix the one piston/ring?
I don't feel good about a repair like that - seems if one went then the others might be about ready to do too?
This would be a good time to upgrade to a "forged" bottom end - Crank & pistons.
But if I do that - what part of the cost would a extended warrenty pay?
Car is a 2000 Vert with 50K - not been "abused" - oil changed every 3K!
It has been run hard a few times - but not more than other vettes I'm sure -

That is a new one for me. A complete loss of compression would indicate either a bent valve or a significant piston failure. Since you have a blowby problem I would assume the second. The damage in that cylinder could be severe. I would have them pull the head and take a look.
My 98 has over 105,000 miles and quite a few of those on road courses and 1/4 mile at a time. My compression still registers within normal parameters.

I would let them fix the problem under warranty and drive away.. :yesnod: If it happens again..STROKE IT !! Why spend money when you don't have to..

Sorry - my statement was not accurate - I called back and got a more detailed explanation - they tell me the number one cylinder shows 70 # compression - the rest fall between 125 - 135 compression.
Sounds to me like a ring problem. I doubt that they squirted oil in that cylinder and ran the compression again - to see if it jumps up. Used to be (back in the old days) that you could tell if it was a valve or rings by doing that.

I agree, unless you got the $ to burn and your dying to put in a high horsepower N/A or forced induction application. If not, have them repair your motor under full warranty which should not cost you a dime! :chevy
Good luck and sorry to here about your misfortune.

Actually I have been lusting after major mods - but the costs have kept me at bay! :)
The first thing I thought was OK - might as well do it now! If it's coming apart anyway - but then the complexity of who pays for what etc. - I don't need more hassles right now!
If I went that direction I would call LGM and have it trailered over to them to complete the build.

They should cover all the labor for you, but see if you can pay the difference in parts prices for forged rods, pistons, and good fastners etc. I know my dealer would, but they're the exception not the rule.
