I am thinking of pullng my engine and doing a forged short block. The one hurdle is pulling the engine. I have been told normal removal is through the bottom. I don't have a lift so that is out. I have read of a few taking it out the top. I am open to suggestions.

Yes, just just pull the tunnel back away from the engine, remove the radiator, and you are a go. You can also leave the AC intact if you want. I would pull the intake and valve covers off for clearance though. We did Tom Garland's C5 on jackstands this way.
I have had my engine pulled from the bottom and it is easier that way b/c it will drop down with the front cradle.

I did mine from the top, and if you lower the front crossmember you don't have to do anything with the torque tube/trans/rear. Just slide the motor forward a little then up. I also left my a/c and front brake lines/ ABS stuff all intact. not bad at all.

Ditto that. Pulled mine from the top the same way.

You don't even have to remove the radiator and fans if you remove all the accessories from the front. Also you don't have to remove the balancer, though it would be slightly easier if you did, and it sounds like you'll be taking it off anyway. It's a bit of a pain, especially in the car. ABS stays in, rack comes out, A/C compresor stays in and hooked up to lines.
