Ok, me and my buddy are having a big disagreement on this. He's a nova guy, and i'm a C4 guy, so neither of us knows C5's that well. I heard somewhere that the transmission is not direclty bolted to engine but instead it sits farther down the drive train somewhere? He says thats crap. So whats the deal on transmissions? where are they? and why? thanks guys! :D
It is in the rear bolted to the differental. The drive shaft runs
through a torqe tube to the clutch mounted on the engine flywheel.
Yup, and the drive shaft in the torque tube turns at engine speed.. you rev it to 7grand and it's spining 7grand.. just cool how it works.. Also not only is the trans in the rear but the but like he said the diff is bolted directly to the trans.. it's just cool... I love the C5..

Also, if you have a manual tranny the flywheel and clutch assy is on the engine. but in the auto tranny car the torque converter is on the front of the tranny in the rear, 'cause it needs tranny fluid
thanks for the info guys, now I can rub my buddy's face in it. And he owes me lunch. It probably wouldn't be feasable to do that to my 85... and I never even thought of the weight distribution before. Really good idea. are the C6's like that too?
Ferrari and Alpha Romero (sp) and others did this in the 50's and 60's if memory serves me right. Not new but very effective. I think this was the greatest engineering change from the C-4 to C-5.

Early 60's Pontiac Tempests also were designed with tranaxles.
just printed them out, this is PERFECT. I called my buddy last night and told him every C5 guy swears that there IS a transaxle! Still didn't really believe me. Says that he SAW a C5 and he didn't see it. Maybe cause he's blind. But tonight the score will be settled, thanks again guys!
I'm really not sure If I can agree or not.. I always thought a trans axel was a trans where the differential was part of the trans case.. The 4L60E in your C5 is the same as one from a tahoe or most GM rear wheel drive.. the main differences are the bell housing is specific to corvette.. and the out put shaft is specific.. and there is no tail shaft. the output shaft is directly inside the diff.. so I'm not sure if you can call it a trans axel.. like some chryslers have a standard mounted engine and are front wheel drive.. the trans on those is a trans axel because the diff is part of the case.. atleast I think.. either way who cares there both trans's

I dont consider it a transaxle because the differential and transmission do not share fluid. I've always heard of transaxles in applications where the gears and diff are in the same oil as the transmission.

I believe you are correct, a true transaxle has tranny and diff. in one case, my bad.
