just got home my NEW '04 Manny 6 speed; heard "the" noise. Ironically, just read an article in Corvette quarterly where a woman described this noise like dieseling.....the response was that while not desirable it is normal and called "shut dwon rattle", the inertia of the gears and tranny suddenly stopping, any thoughts, DOGDOC  :mad
I know what your talking about, I was an import freak until about 3 years ago when I realized it was pointless in spending $20000 to make a $10000 car go fast. So I bought a Vette and started with a fast car. Now, how to get that $20000 again... hmmm. But anyway I noticed all those little things the rattle when you start and shut down the v8 and even odd idleing at times, gear whine all that good stuff. Perfectly normal from what im told.
Its normal. You may notice that it does it only when you are in neutral with the clutch out. Try shutting down with it in first and your foot on the clutch.
It is normal like evryone said. i think they even have a little segment about it in the C5 video. Just try pushing in the clutch when you shut the car down. It won't go away completely but it helps. Kaley
The noise is caused by the gears rattling on the mainshaft. The ATF (Auto Tranny Fluid) that is used inside the gearbox does not dampen this noise like heavy weight gear oil, traditionally used in manual trannys. GM (and other manufacturers) use ATF in manual gearboxes to reduce frictional and "pumping" losses in the tranny, increasing fuel economy. It is "normal" for the C5, but not an acceptable condition for a $40K car, not even a $10K Hyundai does this!!
If you want a quiet car buy a Benz, if you want a sports/muscle car the Corvette is a bargain.
It costs 1/3 to 1/2 of is closest competitors, I will forgive a few noises.
Here it is straight from the you know whats mouth!

Neutral Rattle
There are often concerns of rattel while idling in neutral with the clutch engaged. This is related to the changes in angular acceleration described earlier. This is a light rattle, and once again , vehicles with dual mass flywheels will have reduced noise. If the engine is shut off while idling in neutral with the clutch engaged, the sudden stop of the engine will create a rapid change in angular acceleration that even dual mass flywheels can not compensate. Because of the mass of all the components, this will create a noise. This type of noise should not be heard if the clutch is released ( Pedal pushed to the floor).
This is why I like this site so much. There is a lot of practical experience out there. I bought my hardtop used and didnt hear the noise on the test drive. I was so excited about buying this car the rear end could have fallen out and I probly wouldnt have noticed. Well maybe thats a bit of an overstatement, but I didnt hear the noise until I drove it home and parked it carefully in the garage and then I heard it and experienced the usual panic. After I posted the same question you did I was put at ease with the answer and was once again content and at peace with the world. Then came the rocking seat but thats another story. So continue to enjoy the forum its an great place to learn stuff  :steering:
