Default LS6 cam and heads

I have a Y2K C5 MN6, and thinking about a cam set up. Now im thinking about using a ZO6 cam and heads. same set up on the 405 HP systems. The heads are about $700 and the cam is about $170, say about another 250 for springs and rods.
the cam is a 553/553 , about the same as the thumder racing cam with the exception of the LSA.

anyone else try this ?
I have kook headers, vararam, and GHL exhaust

the ls6 cam is a no where near those specs you put up, i don't want to go look them up so i will render a guess that the specs on the 2002+ ls6 cam is around 205/212 duration and the lift is .533 on both intake and exhaust. These number are not right but very close, this cam is no where near a thunder racing anything, you will see very little gain if any from this cam. The heads are good, but please buy a real cam, especially if you are going through the trouble of putting one in. I was one who bought this cam about 3 years ago, big mistake, no gains for me at all. :D

Forgot one more thing, you don't need to change pushrods for that cam (if you decide to go with it) just the springs.

Well, damn :D I know the duration didn't change, either way, this cam stinks!! i guess i was still thinking of the 01, it had the same lift as the hotcam, but a much smaller duration and larger lobe seperation, i really can't see more than 5-10 hp from this cam, and thats not worth the time

well, it doesn't exactly "stink". I know one shop that added ported LS6 heads and kept the '02 cam in the car and made 425rwhp....not bad for such docile characteristics. Pretty good sleeper cam for someone wanting that.

Of course, I'm not one to talk running a .591 and 112ls....

If you are going to go to the trouble of upgrading your cam go to a more aggressive cam at least 224/224 duration.

Hi,
My ’02 coupe dynos 380’s RWHP with that cam that’s ”too small” and LS6 heads. I don’t have LT’s & run Ti cat-back so you have a shot at higher numbers. This is an easy combination to live with.
Good luck,
Steve

my stock cam in the Y2K years was bumped up a little from others it is :
E and I duration = 209/198 LSA 115.5 valve lift .500/.500

the thunder racing cam I was looking at is :
E and I duration= 220/220 114LSA value lift is .553/.553

the cam in the 2002-2003 ls6 is:
E and I duration= 218/204 117.5 LSA value lift is .551/.555 about $200 dollars cheap and easier on the valve train. what will I lose 5 HP ? not a big issue. money saved goes towards the LS6 heads and I can use the stock LS6 springs

Phils, I think the correct cam specs for the 2001 and up Z06 has already been given at 204/218 duration and .551 and .247 on the lift. In the quote above the intake and exhaust durations are reversed, and the valve lifts given (.551/.555) are not what the factory says they are.

I have the TR 220//553/114 cam with stock 2002 Z06 heads and it is a very pleasant but strong combination to drive, if you are like me and want a stock like idle. I would guess it is worth 12 to 18 hp over the stock 2002 up Z06 cam. More if you go with ported heads.

My only mods are a twinflow, 02 ls6 cam and slp loudmouth. Check dyno #s in sig. Not bad for such a small cam that most people think is a waste to put in a coupe or vert.
