Default Z06 and stock C5 differences

could someone give me a brief rundown of the upgrades of a Z06?
i got a 98 coupe and am slowly learning, as I am also slowly upgrading. i know the Z06 has different swaybars, shocks, and springs, and also a mn12 transmission, but what else.....i have the ls1 obviously....what are the differences between my motor and the 405hp Z motor?

I don't know the specific details of the differences but...

The LS6 has a different cam with slightly higher lift.

Different heads with bigger exhaust and intake ports, higher flow. Not sure about valve sizes, but they are possibly bigger as well. The compression is also higher I believe.

The intake has a larger volume, starting in 2001 all C5s had the LS6 intake.

The cast exhaust manifolds are also different, they closer resemble a shorty header, but not quit as good as shorties, and no where near as good as long tubes.

The intake cover on the air filter has a much larger opening.

The maf I believe is larger with no screen.

The block is sligtly different, mainly for better oiling in turns.

The most significant differences between your motor and an LS6 are the heads and the intake manifold.

Many C5 coupe and vert owners go with a cam much bigger than an LS6 cam, and ported/polished LS6 heads. Along with a good cold air and headers.

You can get a lot more HP with aftermarket parts than you can with the actual Z06 parts. I haven't even gone with upgraded heads and I am putting down 40 or so more HP than a stock Z06

Hello-

I had a 2000 6 speed coupe and now have a 2003 Z so I'll give it try..

Imagine your car being 200 pounds lighter, with a stiffer suspension, better tires, and 65 more horsepower/foot pounds of torque, that likes to be driven at 6500 rpm's and you're behind the wheel of a 405hp Z06.

I'd say the biggest difference between the two cars is the weight. You can mod the Ls1 into a pretty hairy monster but it will never be as light as the Z. After I test drove my 03, I remember getting back into my coupe and it just felt heavy.

there's a lot more data at the http://www.Z06vette.com website if you're really interested.

good luck!

David In Indy

IMHO I would say the 200lbs doesn't begin to compare to the difference in the gearing combined with the extra ponies.

The Z06 is like having a 3.90 rear end in a coupe.

I can tell from your post that you haven't driven a Z06. Yes 400 Horses is a step up from 350, but I could tell this car was leaner the first time I drove it around the block and I never got above 55.

Some things cannot be explained, they need to be "experienced".

I've raced plenty of cars that had more horsepower power, but I beat them because this thing is like a cat..once it gets the jump on you, it's hard to catch.
