Default Is this decent HP for headers only?

I have a 2001 LS1 with the the LGM long-tube headers set up (3" collectors, X-pipe, etc) and triflow exhaust. Also LS1 dyno tune. All else is stock. I have had a dyno on two separate dynojets reading 318/339 and 320/340. Is this decent HP/TQ for these mods? I really felt the low end TQ increase with the LG's but it seems a little low overall. So many threads say 400 RWHP is easy with the addition of heads and mild/moderate cam, but I can't see the additional 80 HP from head/cam. Friend of mine has head/cam/headers and only achieved 385 RWHP. It would be really depressing if you can't get 400 with addition of head/cam?

I think you'll get the 400 hp with the right H/C package. I've been told that the AFR Heads are the way to go, so I'm waiting for them. They should be plentiful by early summer. Are you an A4 or M6? the hp will be easier to get with the M6 than the A4, which I have. Air intake needs to be upgraded as well. I'm hoping to get to 400 hp with a pretty mild cam, something around 220/220. Good Luck!

320hp seems a little low with LG headers.

You should also do an intake at least. They are relatively cheap and pick up power.

Red,

As I recall, Andy did your tune and as far as I'm concerned, he's the man in this neighborhood. He did my work before he had the dyno, so I really don't what my real hp is. But I'm pretty happy with the performance for now until the AFRs come out. Andy has a waiting list w/o obligation for installation. If you're interested in a H/C package, I'd get on his list and just decline if you change your mind. I'm 7th on his list :D

I was also hot on an LSX intake manifold until I found out that all 2001 LS1 engines and after have the LS6 intake manifold. It appears that the gain over an LS6 manifold is minor. But that will change when the 90mm throtle bodies come in a month or two. That will get you over the 400 hp line if the H/C package doesn't do it alone. Beware of a very aggressive Cam, you idle will be rough and the engine will lobe (sound irregular).

Yes, that's about what some '01 and up 6 speeds have put out bone stock. :(

You need to get an intake to take full advantage of your headers. The stock airbox is very restrictive.

I made 337 rwhp and 351 rwtq with TPIS headers, x-pipe, corsa exhaust, and the vortex intake. With an intake, you should be over my numbers.

I have an 02 A4 with the same LG LT's, 3" X and down pipes, modified stock air box and Borla stingers added today. Had it dyno tuned in Fla two weeks ago...it was running very rich!!!
Base was 310hp..320 torque. After 6 pulls with minor tuning to correct overichness. 330hp..and 350 torque. The tuner said I may be losing 5-10 hp from the airbox and another 10-15 from the stock mufflers that I had on.

I have the stainless works headers and a blackwing with a Predator tune and have about 330 rwhp and 340 tq. You seem to be within the normal range. Dont sweat the numbers just enjoy the ride!

I have a friend with a 2001 C5 with TPIS headers, no cats, Blackwing and Corsa exhaust: 340+hp and 350torque. Reading the posts in this thread, it appears peak numbers are very similar between all the various header brands with similar light mods...don't know about adding h/c packages, though.

Unfortunately...yep they look low...I dynod 307rwhp/317rwtq 100% on a dynojet, add in the fact that you have an ls6 intake on your car from the factory that would give you another 5-10rwhp advantage over me. Not to mention my car had no tuning done, and was running about 11:1 a/f.

They appear a little low. I would upgrade the intake to a Blackwing. You can see my dyno numbers below in my sig.

Ah, do not be discouraged my friend. I hit 400 with ONLY a cam and LG's headers. You'll "freak" on what a good cam will do for these motors.

I think you are a little low. My 99 FRC with only a Blackwing pulled 326hp/330torque after a little tuning with the MAFT. (Started at 312hp) Fuel was too fat but by leaning conservatively, 326 was peak with great overall driveability.

Needs something...

My 1999 FRC pulled 311 hp and 317 tq with no mods, stock airbox and paper filter, when she hit 52,000 miles.

I've been wondering...it's not actually possible to get about 55 more rwhp with just bolt ons, is it? Including remaining completely smog-legal?

I agree that an better air intake, even just a K&N would up that easily. With a really good one, and a head/cam job there is no reason you can't top 400rwhp. Look at my mods below, and my SAE corrected rwhp is more like 381rwhp. That is with just the usual bolt-ons, stock LS6 heads, higher ratio rockers and tuning. Am in the middle of putting a mild cam in, and hoping that will get me over the 400rwhp hump. Doing an underdrive pulley while I am down there just in case I need just a few more horses.

Drop a good airbox in, pull the MAF screen and you should be 335-340 easy, and a good head/cam package should put you over the top. Good luck!
