Transmission Cable
I need help/instructions on how to remove/replace an automatic transmission shift control cable. Is this something I can do myself or would I be wise to take it into the dealership?

The exhaust system H pipe, shifter and tunnel cover as well as interior console have to be removed before the shifter cable can be changed. Put the car up on 4 jack stands and remove the 6 exhaust nuts by heating them with a propane torch as they usually are rusted on; be careful not to torch any wires, aluminum foil is cheap insurance to keep some of the heat away from wiring. Disconnect the O2 sensors and unclip the cables from the body so the exhaust H pipe can be dropped. The tunnel cover has about 40 screws to remove and then you will see the shifter cable. Use extreme caution when attaching the cable to the shifter since it is fragile plastic and will break if lifted up too much, install the shifter to the cable then adjust the transmission end by feel so the detents in both will be the same. If you see recent directions on the Forum about changing the rear end you will see photos of the tunnel cover and H pipe.

Thanks for the information! :) This will be a great help! I've got the console and shifter off already. I just need to do the work under the car now.
The dealership replaced the shifter recently (3 or so months ago) under the extended warranty. I really suspect that the damage was done at that time.
They probably won't take responsibility...but I may try anyway.

I've got it all torn appart and I can easily see the transmission cable. I just can't seem to figure how to remove the cable. Anybody out there know how to get the cable removed from the mounts?
