Default Some oddball Magnacharger questions

[woops, meant to put this in the FI section...]

Yes, these are strange questions, but they occurred to me reading through Corky Bell's "Supercharged!" book last night:

1.) Would the car run if the belt was removed from the blower, or would the lobes of the rotors provide a tight enough seal that it couldn't get in any air? Would you be able to drive it around, or is it just enough air to be able to idle around?

2.) Does anybody make larger *underdrive* pulleys to spin the blower slower? I doubt it, but I imagine one could be made if so required.

3.) how long does a pulley swap take on the Magnacharge? 30 mins? 1hr? 2+?

Just curious,

-J

I have no idea, and I really wouldn't want to find out, for fear of hurting something. But who knows, maybe it would be fine.

I imagine so too, but I can't see why this would be needed. You could always change compression with heads, pistons, or head gasket thickness and be OK.

[3.) how long does a pulley swap take on the Magnacharge? 30 mins? 1hr? 2+?
I have not swapped my pulley, because at this point I want to upgrade to the intercooled version. I imagine if you have the right tools it wouldn't be that hard. If it's pressed on, which I'm sure it is, it may be tough to get on and off, but not impossible.

Sorry I couldn't provide you more useful information. I'll try to email this thread to some people who may have more info.

That would be great. I'm also curious to see if anybody has any noise/sound information about the Magnacharger. One of the Mag road racing videos here: http://www.lingenfelter.com/LPEinmedia.asp, says that his car was measured at 99dB under WOT, and he got black-flagged at Laguna Seca.

My local SCCA region has 93dB limits, so I'm curious if the Magnacharger would be something I could even install and still be able to race.

Cheers,

-J

Grand Prix GTP and Regal GS owners can take the belt off thier eaton and the car will still run fine. The engine can still breath through the bypass valve. You'll lose at least 80-100 hp due to the loss of boost, the engine breathing through the bypass valve, and the conservative(supercharger) tune. I wouldn't recommend it for what you want to do, but in case of a emergency it's fine. I know http://www.southfloridapulleyhq.com/ can make custom pulleys for other eaton applications, maybe they could make one for you.

Not that this will help much, but check out video #1 on my site, http://www.yellohh.com and it will give you an idea of sound at WOT.

Jake, a good friend has a magnacharger on hie '01 Z06. He has Headers and 3" pipes all the way back to mufflers. The exhaust was installed at Mufflex (spelling?) in New Jersy.

When we go to DE events at Summitt Point, you can easily tell it's him coming down the straight because of the noise it makes.

But it is not the exhaust! Other cars there are a lot louder! It's the Magnacharger. I swear, the first time I heard it coming I thought it was the police because it sounds like a siren. Very cool.

 :smash:

It is a pretty cool sound. Much cooler than that lumpy cam nonsense you ol' V8 types get off on so much. :D :leaving:

Unfortunately, the folks in the apartments across from where we race don't agree. :skep: :nopity , so whether I like it or not, the car has to stay not a whole lot louder than a stock Z06 :(

Thanks for the answers guys :)
