I just bought my '98 and the seller told me not to use the parking brake. I said he was supposed to have taken it to the dealer for some kind of recall fix or something of that nature. He told me to take to my dealer and that they should fix something on it.
Has anyone had any parking brake problems, and if so, was it a dealer fix??
I got a 98 and I had this problem for a while. The parking break just needs to be adjusted. I took mine to a brake shop and from what I saw they took my rims off, and I think they tightened the connection. They charged me about $15.00 to adjust the parking break. To be honest with you, most of the time I need to crank the hand brake all the way up for it to hold. But compared to what it was before (which had no affect at all) I am 100% satisfied as it does serve a purpose now.

I also have a 98 coupe. The Emergency brake on mine didn't work very well either. You have to take the brake calipers and rotors off the car and you will see how the emergengy brake works. There is a star adjuster on each brake shoe that you have to adjust out to seperate the shoes, keep adjusting this out until it is tight putting the rotor back over the brake shoes. I had to do mine twice before I was happy with it. Your emergency brake handle should not have to go up more than about 45 degrees for it to work well. If you don't want to do it yourself, a wheel alignment/brake shop may be able to help you. This is a very common complaint with C-5 owners.
look in tech tips under tools at the top of this page... ebrake is a common problem easily fixed,,, required taking off the rear wheels, brake calipers, rotors and adjusting the shoe brakes..
My 98 coupe is also having a problem with a loose ebrake. Question is how can the ebrake wear if you never use except when car is standing still. Seems to me that it may be a problem with cable stretching??? :(

you can take a little lay pout of the cable buy pupping up quickly on the ebrake handle, but its the shoes themselves that are the culprit.. the shoes need to be adjusted properly.. and they are not done properly at the factory... you need to take off the rear rotors ( both sides.. ) adjust the star adjuster untill you can not get the rotor on.. it took me 43 clicks to get the proper adjustment.. when you think they are getting tight.. and you feel some drag... make them two clicks tighter... then force the rotors back on... you will se that most rotor drums are tapered... they start tight, then they slide on easier as you push them on all the way.. I adjusted mine once five years ago and it has been perfect ever since... it is fully locked up at 45 degrees of the lever... at 30 degrees it is fully disengaged..
with the pads expanded all the way out and myself having to get the rotor on with a rubber mallet, the car still won't hold in my driveway in neutral. What do you use to adjust the star clicker thing??

how do you know the shoes are all the way out if you dont know how to expand the adjuster?
My parking brake has no resistance whatsoever when I pull back on it. I can see that an adjustment is needed by what everyone is saying here.
When I started this thread I wasn't sure if that was the problem or if something else was screwed up on it by GM. Thanks for all the insight about the parking brake adjustment procedure. It sounds simply enough.
Can I use my old drum brake adjuster wrench that I used to use on my '56 Chevy in college about 35 years ago!!! I've been saving that thing for some reason all these years.......now I know why...if it can be used. I'll be checking this all out this weekend.
I had this done yesterday. The rear wheels have to be removed. Then the rotors. After the rotors are removed the adjustment is made. The mechanic told me that 10 clicks is all you should have to feel after proper adjustment. Mine was 20 clicks before I had it adjusted. Total cost to adjust=$80.
Well, considering i have to use rubber mallet to get the rotor back on I am thinking that it is as far out as possible. I just wanted to see how everyone else is adjusting the star adjuster, so I might try again. Is there a particular tool to use that makes it easier.
acording to the manual all you should have to do is pull on the hand break at least 3 times in a row an the brakes should be self adjusting. I never had a problem with my 98 and I use the hand break all the time.
