Default M12 tranny + 3.15 gears? just a quick question or two

I am wanting to do a A4 to M6 swap on the monkey. Help me on this just so I know. With the ratio's in the M12 and the 3.42 in the Z06 the final drive is actually diferent right? So if I decided to drop in a M12 instead of a M6 it would do the same to my final drive correct? But what would that final ratio be? I been away a while now so my knowledge has well kinda pahsed out as it is not so much a priority while I am over here. I am seeing alot of changes in the LS1 world I need to get caught back up on when i get back. Anyway thanks for any help.

Damon

Not sure I follow the question, but its monday and I'm slow.

4th on the M6 and M12 with a 3.42 stock rear is 1:1-

Hope that helps.

hmm, works for me. I was jsut curious. I heard before that the due to the gearing in the M12 tranny in teh Z06 that the final drive was around 3.90 or something. I have no clue on the drive train. I just know how to break them :D So does someone know what the ratios are in the M6 from 1-4 gears vs the 1-4 in the M12? And what would be the advantage of going with a M12 over a M6? Sorry if i sound lost. Its because i am  Just trying to fit it all together is all. Thanks in advance..

You are thinking correct. The 6speed coupe and the Z06 both have 3.42 rear gears but the M12 in the Z is geared much steeper. The diff. b/w the 1-3 gears is like a coupe having a 3.90 rearend. They are exactly the same in 4th (1:1) and 5 and 6 are slightly steaper.

For your transplant using basic logic over mathmatical fact :D. You would have the equivalent of a 3:6x rear gear in 1-3. There would be a huge drop when you hit 4th though because it will be 3.15. 6th will probably be nearly unusable. Right now with a 3:42 gear 6th at 70 is 1500 rpms. A 3:15 would drop that underdrive gear down to probably around 12-1300 rpm.

My .02 would be to pick up a 3:42 gear and dropping in the M12. Or if you are not very heavily modified and can go back to stock easily it would be cheaper to just trade the car for a 6-spd.

Hope that made sense to you. It did in my head anyway

Actually is what i been thinking of doing is just trading it lol. Or selling it, but mine is paid off and i hate to waste cash on getting another then again modding it. Decisions huh. Maybe i need to just slap in a FLP Level V instead. I do no thave much money in my car actually. I have more in the wheels than anything lol. My H/C and all where about 2500 that including the tuning and LS6 intake, ASP Pulling gaskets, you get the idea. I miss slappin gthe gears like i did in my '00 Z28. If I did this i might as well go all out and do 4.10's with the M12. The parts for the M12 minus clutch was around 2900 and i will do the labor. If i go with the FLP i looking at near the same without a stall i think. Have to look into it more. And to think I thought I had this all figured out lol.

GEAR BOX:
M-6 ------- M-12
----------------------------------
1. 2.66 ------- 2.97
2. 1.78 ------- 2.07
3. 1.30 ------- 1.43
4. 1.00 ------- 1.00
5. .74 -------- .84
6. .50 -------- .56
R 2.90 -------- 3.28

Trans: MN6/3.42.....MN6/3.73.......MN6/3.90.......MN6/4.10.......MN12/3.42
1...........9.09..............9.92...... .......10.37.............10.93.......... ...10.89
2...........6.08..............6.64...... .......6.94...............7.31.......... .....7.08
3...........4.44..............4.85...... .......5.07...............5.34.......... .....4.89
4...........3.42..............3.73...... .......3.90...............4.10.......... .....3.42
5...........2.53..............2.76...... .......2.88...............3.04.......... .....2.87
6...........1.71..............1.86...... .......1.95...............2.05.......... .....1.91

NOTE: This does not include the Z06 tire which is .5 of an inch shorter than the taller LS1 rear runflat.
This effectively lowers the Z06 rear gear to a "3.50" when the two are compared side by side.
