I am on my way to Dallas right now. I tanked up in El Paso however about every 50 miles the needle drops to Empty anf I get a check gauges light. The car runs fine is the funny thing. I pull over relieve tank pressure, sit for like 5 minutes and start it up and it is ok for another 50 minutes. There are a few codes also that I clear out.
Has any one else had this problem. What do I do, its gettin annoying!!! =P
Sounds like the faulty gas gauge syndrone. :smash: There was a TSB that C5Tech posted about a few months back. Do a search on him and see if you can find it. The dealer reprograms the pcm and it sometimes helps. Good Luck!
I had a similar problem with my 2000 coupe but it was more sporadic than what you describe. The first time it happened was after going from about 12000 down to 6000 feet so I just chalked it up to the altitude change. Later it happened again after refueling so it wasn't the altitude and I knew I had plenty of gas. As you said it ran fine and it usually corrected itself after a short while but it sure annoyed the crap out of me. I asked the service manager about it once and he just said to bring the car in if it happened again. Well it never stayed on empty long enough to get it to the dealer to be looked at so I just lived with it. There was a tech bulletin on this awhile back 01-06-04-022 that I think called for replacing the sending unit. My advice is to make note of the details and take it in for service. If you have GMPP is should be covered. Good luck.
I have a 1998 Corvette and no warranty. does this cost anything at the dealer or is it free? Also couldnt find the exact post from C5Tech but did find a TSB on alldata.com

Would this be the right TSB?
also in Dallas, is there a good dealer i can go to to get this fixed before I finish my trip?
I am still on an 800 mi + trip and I just refueled again. After refueling the needle was ok for about an hour and then the needle plummeted back to empty.
It is never sporadic, it either goes to empty or is right on the money. Once it is on empty it does not reset itself unless the car is turned off for a while.
again I am looking for a reputable dealer in the Dallas/Ft Worth area that could check this out. I dont have GMPP or any other warranty. What would you expect I would pay for this service. If you know of a reputable dealer in Dallas/Ft Worth area please post it on here.
I am only going to be in Dallas for a short time. Is this a pretty much in and out thing or does it require parts etc.

Re: No Fuel WITH Fuel!!!! (TexCorvette)
Unfortunately, a very common problem. Sounds like your fuel sending units are going bad. Do a search and I'll bet you will find some similar situations and the responses. Good luck.
On a '98 it's usually the sending unit in the tank. If you're out of warranty it would be your nickel, actually, quite a few nickels. On an '01, it's usually a reprogramming issue - I just had this done on mine (reflash the PCM with an updated program). Best thing to do is just forget the gas gauge, and reset one of your trip indicaters each time you fill up - when you get to 200-250 miles, refuel.
I agree with allanlaw forget the gas guage for now and just use the trip odometer to keep track of the mileage. If your sending unit needs replacing that's not going to be cheap and will probably take a whole day at the dealer. Since you're in the middle of a trip you could just wait until you get home to take it to your local dealer. It's annoying but it won't hurt anything and the car should run just fine. :seeya
I noticed that a code popped up in the IPC. The code was P0461HC under 10 PCM which seems to correspond to what everyone is posting.
I did a search as suggested and found a lot of suggestions to use chevron with techron gas. I have switched the gas and have been driving like this for a couple hours now.
Also does any one have any cost figures for replacing this? Is it a couple hundred? more than 500? more than 1000?
Unfortunately I dont have reputable dealers back home and was trying to get this fixed while out of town. As always the forum is quick and responsive even on the road.

I also have a 98 coupe with 89,000 miles on it. This problem has happened to me also......not as repeatedly as yours. Try using a couple of bottles of Techron Fuel Injection Cleaner. This seemed to help with my problem.
My (same) problem was fixed under the extended warranty - cost around $1400 to replace both fuel sending units! I paid the 200 deductible and waled away a little lighter but happy I didn't have to pay the whole amount!
Yep...sounds just like my problem...was a fuel sending unit....glad I had the extended warranty. You may want to hold of fixing it and get the extended warranty. Mine was only $1,200 for 100K 5yr. And the repair wsa over 2K!
Try running Techron gas additive, sold at Wallmart. It worked for me.Also I changed brand of gas, I now run Sunoco 94 octane gas.I think you'll find that some of the guys that have had the sending units repaired, had the problem come back. :yesnod: Good Luck
My 98 was fixed under the dealer's warranty. ( New fuel pump and sending unit.) Make sure you dont overfill your tanks. (That set mine off) Mine did it again over the weekend, but was fine after one re-start. Something that I'll live with. :chevy
