Is installing 3.42's without a torque converter a waste. I had heard how it is financially better to do both jobs at once, however I somehow seem to think that no matter what kind of converter is put in, it will be more loose than stock. I like the way the vette drives now and the idea of having to press the gas futher to get moving does not really appeal to me, though it would be great to have better launches.

I'd say ... YES; but only if you would later pay someone to swap in a higher stall TC. Only then it would be a waste not to.
But if you're pleased with the stock TC... then don't change it. The most noticeable improvement IMO with a higher stall TC would be in running the 1/4 mile at the dragstrip. How often do you visit the track?
I have a PT2400 forsale. It is new, Protorque exchanged it for me.
I had it in my 02 auto with 3.73s and loved the combo. My car is a daily driver and never goes to the track. The PT2400 will give you a lot more from a stop or low end, but drives just like stock until you hammer it. The car still moves at ilde like stock and if you do not push the gas guickly to the floor you will not see a diff from stock. $550.00 shipped in the US.
Do both at the same time and save the money on the install.
There is a lot of post with this combo on the board 3.42s and PT2400.
You should do a search and you will see they like it. :)
This converter will not hurt your in town gas mileage like a high stall will.
I don't have to push down at all, my car starts moving without pedal on a flat surface. Do yourself a favor and change the Tq converter.
:iagree:
You will regret it if you don't install a T/C. There are converters available that will give you near stock driveabilty when you are driving normally. If looseness is a big concern the Yank 3000 with 2.2 STR will give you nearly stock driveability and a great boost in performance over the stock T/C.
i have 342's with the stock converter and i just love the way my car drives, but i do have heads and cam job too don't know if that makes a big different but i love my setup.
I have 3.42's with a stock converter and a blower, perfect combo! :D
A higher stall converter would be a waste of money, can't get traction now with current setup!
Now if your going to run slicks thats a different story........ :seeya
I went from 3.15's to a 3.42 rear end and kept the stock converter. If I had to do it again I would have had a new converter installed with the 3.42 install.
do urself a favor... go with at least a 3000 stall TC. anything less will be a waste of money and trust me u will like the gains. 1.8 or a 2.0 str for the street
