Slow leak from tranny...

Slow leak from tranny...
Well it appears my tranny is leaking fluid very slowly, at the rate of about a dime-sized blotch on the driveway after parking overnight. On closer inspection, it's coming from a seam/seal/gasket that runs side-to-side along the bottom of the tranny...
What could have caused this?
How do you recommend I go about making it stop?? All that comes to mind so far is pulling the tranny apart and replacing that gasket, but that seems like an awful lot of trouble for a silly little leaky gasket...could I get away with smearing some sort of leak-stopping gunk on there??
How much fluid is in the tranny, and how bad is it to be a little low?
I get freaked out every time the shifter feels extra notchy now, visions of a tranny with no fluid in it flash before my eyes :eek:
