I'm pretty stock in the engine with the exception of the Blackwing, high flow coupler and Borlas for exhaust. I got a good deal on a set of ported and polished MAF ends. Anyone have any experience with these? (Yes, I did a search and only saw Mean Greens post 3 years ago :D )
I gotta ask once more gurus. Here is a link to the 2 parts I got from a forum member. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=768950
STUPID QUESTION. Was the screen in one of these pieces or is it in the MAF itself? Also, do I have to relearn the PCM after I install these?
Ok here is the deal.. sell them on the C5 Parts for Sale....
MAF ends are without a doubt, the most overrated and misunderstood.
The bigger MAF does flow more air... BUT its the velocity of the Stock size that gives you the kick in the pants when you crack the throttle..
The air moving past the hot wires in the MAF cool it down. The faster it flows the cooler it gets providing the motor with more fuel.
The bigger MAF just ends up slowing down the velocity and therefore your fuel..
I have played with the Nylon MAF ends and even used the MAF Translator to tune for it.. I then upgraded to LS1edit..had them for over a 2 years.
The car felt Sluggish even though it was giving me near perfect Autotaps. I assumed it was the brutally hot Forida weather.
One day I swapped the MAF ends back to the Stock Aluminum ones (Screenless) But I poshished them before I put them on just to make em perty... ;)
Anyway, my first ride shocked me...The slightest crack of the throttle and she ripped forward. I could not get the smile off my face..
I learned the hard way because I kept insisting to others that MAF end WILL Work if you Tune for them.. The one thing you CANNOT tune for is Velocity!
A few other things... The MAF is not the restiction. The Throttle Body is.. The stock TB opening is smaller and flows less than the MAF. So opening the MAF is USELESS. Remember this discussion only applies to a basically stock motor..
98Black - here's what I experienced when they were on my car, a stock '99 coupe (and to answer your question, the screen was a part of the front section, and the split bar was a part of the back). I had the opportunity to dyno each change I made to my car, as I was working with JCL on his exhaust system. Every move we made on the car was documented well. My baseline was 293 rwhp and 303 torque. I added the JCL exhaust and increased 11 and 11, so 304 / 314. I added a smooth coupler and gained 1.5 hp and 1 tq. Then I added a Tric filter (not the whole intake system, just the filter) and increased another 2 hp. Then the ported MAF ends, which added 3 hp and 2 tq. on the next pull. Finally I had the LS1 Edit programming and ended up at 319.9 hp and 337 lbs./ft. of torque. JCL had his '00 FRC done at the same time with the same tuner, and was a full 8 hp and 15 lbs./ft. of torque lower than me in the final analysis. He left his screens in, and only added a smooth coupler, baffle exhaust and a Blackwing. Why the big difference? Not really sure, but I know that I came out way ahead in the end, and I know the few differences between our mods. I think the ported MAF ends were a good part of the set-up I put together. Some can argue that "the screens are there for a reason", while others point out that "the Z06 doesn't have them". I had great results with the screens out of my car. Hope that helps a little and doesn't confuse further. I would have used them again, but they won't fit on my new car.
No, a Stock LS1 will see no benefit to a bigger TB. Only if you have a heavily modded motor will you see a gain..
And even then I doubt much. I would suggest do H/C/I before you even think about TB and all that stuff. Everything Ive seen with dyno videos dont bother with the MAF and TB til you hit 600+
