Help Me Pick a Cam
Looking for reliability and driveability - have it installed and forget about it, minimal risk of spring breakage, not looking for the highest hp but want some bang for the bucks, little if any loss down low and in midrange, decent idle but want to know it has a cam - no shake.. don't want to have to get modified throttle body, car needs to pass a sniffer and be driveable prior to having it tuned, available gas 93 octane, street performance is the goal, maybe a trip or 2 to the strip. Any recommendations? or cams to avoid? Do I need a ported oil pump? dbl row timing chain? hardeened push rods? Will adding these items improve durability and driveability?

Call MTI and get the same C2 cam that MC TORCH RED is running is that cam ROCKS and is proven & battled tested time in and time again on both the street and strip!!!:D

Sure, it gives up some top end to the 224's, but I think a cam that's ballsier down low and throughout the midrange is more useful for most people anyway. It would complement the heads you've selected well, imho.

As far as lift goes, a .581 lift will give you more power than a .566 lift but will feel a bit rougher at low RPM. Also, a .581 will be harder on the springs and you might have to consider getting new springs after a couple of years or at least have them checked.
From what you say you want, I think you would be pleased with a 224/224 566/566 114 but get it tuned. That way it will pass the sniffer for sure and run smooth and give you a bigger increase in power.
Since it is a 99 then I would go for at least a new oil pump if not a ported one. The timing chain should be replaced and there is none better than the Rollmaster double roller, which happens to be not expensive at less than $100. I would also get the hardened pushrods as well as Comp R lifters. These items add a bit more to the price and many have skipped them but it makes for a more reliable package
IMHO, Stage 2 heads are overkill for a stock-displacement street engine. Unless you are racing every weekend, have a very high-lift cam, and are looking for every last bit of power, you will be spending a lot of extra $$$ for just a very few ponies. My Absolute Speed heads cost less that $1K (on a GP), and have worked flawlessly.
Even though I ran the Yella Terras (got them dirt cheap), they are also overkill for a street engine, ditto for the Type-R lifters.
If you have LT headers, stick to a straight pattern cam (intake/exhaust same duration. If you are running stock exhaust, shorties, mid-lengths, or any exhaust with catalytic convertors, a split-duration cam (extra exhaust duration) works best.
The difference in the TQ curve between a 112 and 114 LSA is miniscule. I have compared several different dyno charts, and it's almost impossible to detect any difference betwen 2K to 6K RPMs. The 112 will give a slightly higher TQ peak, but will fall off more quickly after 6K RPMs. The 114 will idle better, emit fewer emissions, have better throttle response under 2K ROMs, and give better gas mileage. The 112 sounds meaner at idle.
I know lots of guys like the 224/224, as it is about as big as you can go and still pass emissions. However, you will need tuning to get decent street manners. Even w/ my smaller 218/224 grind, and several tuning sessions w/ LS1Edit, I still had some surging, cold-start, and low-speed bucking issues.
Hope this helps. As usual, this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
I think the 224 is a bit small :yesnod: Wash
REV double springs and ti retainers, comp harden push rods, stock rockers.
i have stock oil pump but you should change yours to a newer revised one.
idle and engine manners are good without tuning -not great, tuning is coming
i wanted a street car, no hassles, and i need to pass NJ inspection.
i think this is a safe combination to meet those goals

I'm running 3.42 gears and drive it in rush hour stop and go surface roads and road trips. I think the cam has actually talked some of the Atlanta crew into going with the current batch of big cam it drives so well.

Now that's A Great cam for max perf. on street without giving up any streetability. ALAN FUTRUAL recommended i go with the same cam in my Z06 when i starting OBSESSING about camming her up this winter (after vowing not to open up the heart of my brand new LS6 motor as i wanted 1000% stock reliability with full warranty and since i already own two MAX EFFORT race/pro street cars). SO FAR i haven't subcumed to TEMPTATION!
