Have any of you had a wheel bearing go out on your C5?
What were the symptoms? I've got a whine/growl that appeared about 2000 miles ago ... it has not gotten any worse (other than its driving me nuts). Seems to go away in a higway-speed sweeping right turn, but doesn't change at all in a left hand turn. Can hear it above ~35mph ... no abnormal sound at all below 35mph. (I'm nearly positive it's not tire noise.)
Wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar problem.
I thought mine was going out, but I was wrong. Anyway, get the Timken wheel bearing from Autozone for $126. I have some instructions that I can email you. They didn't work for me, so I bought the tool from our service manual. It cost just over $100 from SPX/Kent-Moore. This job can be done in less than an hour if you hustle.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. The diference in noise intensity while side loading is a big tip.
DO NOT buy the GM part number. The Timken is the same and much cheaper:
Forgot to mention that your wheel bearing may be covered by the warranty. I took mine in last weekend for what I thought was the wheel bearing, and was told that it would cost me nothing because my GMAC extended warranty would cover it. It wasn't the wheel bearing, so it cost me much more than nothing.
I had 4 on my 97 replaced in 2002. First noticed a growling noise that was hard to pinpoint. Dealer replaced right front after some intense searching. Noise lessened. Then dealer replaced right rear several months later when noise got worse that didn't correct the problem so they went to the left front which helped some and then finally the left rear which got rid of the noise altogther. GMPP picked up all the cost.

had my rt rear wheel bearing replaced by gmpp last week. symptoms were a whinning noise from the rear that was not really that loud, but really annoying, and went away under 30 mph.
1fastmc5 --- did the right rear take care of the problem? That 's what I thought it was all along until I let a Service Mgr at the Chevy house listen to it. He was convinced it was the right front. I'm now convinced he was wrong ... spent last Saturday replacing right front, and like earlier posts it lessened the noise, but I'm still annoyed driving to work.
SO ... sound like I need to replace the right rear and just work my way around clockwise huh? Hell of a way to spend $600!! :( :mad
You can totally do this job for about $250 yourself. Just buy the Timken part at Autozone for $126, and the ball joint tool from SPX for just over $100...and you may not even need the ball joint tool. In about an hour, you can jack the car up, take off the wheel, brake caliper, brake rotor, and wheel bearing AND get it put back together.
To check which wheel is going bad, jack up the car, the right side in your case, and wobble the wheel by grabbing the top and bottom. There shouldn't be any play, and if there is, that wheel bearing is bad.

Re: C5 wheel bearing ... help (John Shiels)
Rock Auto said BCA bearing 165 and AC Delco 517  which I thought they were. What is BCA? Chinese?
I just looked up BCA and it is Federal Mogul when I looked at there list and search it said none available.

BCA is a big and well known bearing manufacturer and has been around for many years. Not sure about now but they used to sell their products in a blue box.
Just replaced my right rear bearing unit. And the left rear unit to keep it matched up. Purchased BCA. Much cheaper than the AC Delco part!! What happened was (super obvious) the TCU / PCM went into various ICM codes, the ABS T/C speed sensors are integrated into the bearing hub. When the bearings went, so did the sensor. I just have allot of miles on the car. 130k.
p.s. forgot to mention another symptom, the RR wheel had about 3/16" shake when up on the rack. The Left had a normal 1/32" or so. Something to check during regular maintence checks...
