Default Calling all A4 Tranny experts!

I recently took out the differental and tranny for a torque converter and 3.42 swap. I did this by lowering the driveshaft tube low enough to take ot the transaxle and transmission without dropping the tube out. I have a few questions for anyone who has don it this way and trans condition questions:
- do I remove the converter by turning the crank or turn the motor over via key so I can access the TQ bolts through the peep hole at the rear bellhousing?

Once I do get the TQ converter off, do I install it the same way I took it off or push it on the trans and install it that way?

Do I need to replace the seals at the front and rear of the trans?

I noticed a bad leak when it was together and I was told that the rear transaxle bushing/seal was bad...could it be from the rear transmission seal?

THe rear transmission shaft has som play to it (can move it around abit)
Is this normal? transmission worked fine and the car has 74K miles on it...I don't know if this is correct milage since the maint. records showed otherwise.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for helping a fellow CF member...

Keith

yes, just "tap" the starter position of the ignition key. Remember this shaft turns the same speed as the engine crank, so it doesn't take much starter engagement to get the shaft to turn a lot.

Do I need to replace the seals at the front and rear of the trans?
you're asking about the "trans". I'd say no - if there wasn't an existing leak. But since your C5 has 74k miles, it may be a good thing to do simply as preventative maintenance.

I noticed a bad leak when it was together
what color was the fluid, light red or light green?

Sorry, can't help you on the TC part.

.... the play is normal... the rear diff supports the output shaft. The seal is most likely leaking(rear)..If it's a brown seal, replace it with the newer black seal. You should replace the converter seal just to be safe, its cheap. Spin the converter and lightly push it into place. Take your time and you'll be fine  goodluck!

The seal your referring to is the rear differential seal or the rear trans seal?

Also, the rear converter seal...do you mean the fron trans seal or is there a seal on the torque converter? haven't taken the TQ off yet.
do you mean spin the converter lightly on the front trans shaft and install the the trans with the TW on the trans?

Sorry for the q's...just want to do it right the first time DIRTFT!

Thanks

....... The rear trans seal. If you are replacing the converter, then replace the seal. Install the converter while the trans is on the jack, lightly pushing while spinning it.

Put the torque converter on the transmission before you bolt the tranny to the torque tube, when you put the converter on you'll have to slip it on the shaft and spin it a couple of times in order to engage the pump completely, if the torque converter is not seated completely you will damage the gears in the forward pump.

Ask me how I know this?

it really sucks to install a tranny and then find out you have to remove it again. :mad

You will need to fill the TC before you put it on.
