I am getting ready to have the dealership put in my new piston rings due to my oil consumption problem. I was thinking that I will go ahead and have them put in the new 02 or 03 pistons while the motor is apart. Does anybody have any better suggestions. Maybe some aftermarket pistons that are better? I dont drive it everyday but I do drive it alot. Also, I might be changing the heads and cam this summer. thanks alot for your help
It's a tough decision. Personally, I wouldn't go with '02 or '03 pistons if the one's you have are in good shape. Why incur the cost...
You may want to think about putting the ring job off until your H/C job. You can then get aftermarket pistons that match cylinder heads for your desired compression ratio.
And if you have enough cash, you might as well go to a 382 or 383 stroker kit since the engine is going to be pulled and your are getting new heads and a cam anyway!
Depending on when your car was Manufactured you may already have the coated pistons. The coated pistons were brought into service in April of 01. I'm in a similar situation, I have a oil consumption problem no piston slap though. I want to mod the car as well, however, I don't want to take the engine apart too many times etc. Anyway, I like the Wiesco pistons if I was to go aftermarket, I always had good luck with them in my bikes. You may want to consider the GM coated pistons if your engine doesn't alread have them. Just my .02 for what its worth.
Hi,
These new Speed Pro pistons are a bunch cheaper than new Chevy parts. They are hypereutectic like the stockers and coated. http://www.21cgt.com/FMWebCatalog/default.htm
You can also see them in the current Popular Hot Rodding magizine.
If the bores in your engine are OK than new rings will do the job. The Chevy replacement rings have a bunch more tension and a change in the second ring profile to control oil better. If you don't have piston slap, I would not change the pistons.
