My GF has a '98 Pace Car. I've been doing some basic "catch up" maintenance projects on it, but one problem has be baffled.
There is a noise coming from about the middle of the dash (i.e. radio or heater control vicinity), that is only there when the engine is running. The only way to describe it is that it sounds like an old mechanical speedometer cable that is frayed right before it breaks. Sort of a ticking, clicking, whirling sound. All controls "appear" to work right. It's relatively loud and incredibly annoying. She says it's made the noise since she got the car 5 years ago. (Don't ask why she never had it worked on!)
I was experiencing a dash vibration while driving over rough pavement in the same area you speak of. I ripped it all apart and couldn't figure out what was making the noise and then it all of the sudden stopped. Now its all apart and no noise. I guess I'll put it back together and see if it ever returns.
Sorry I couldn't offer any solutions.
Were you doing any work under the hood? (Opps sorry, just noticed that the problem has been there a good while) I've had several experiences after working on the engine, where fuel lines etc. were moved and touched the firewall and caused some strange interior noises. Seemingly from the dash, but actually from something rubbing the firewall. (firewall acting like a sounding board and amplifying otherwise small sounds)
Took me awhile to figure out that the rattle I heard only when alone was the passenger seat belt clip tapping the door sill. It needs a rubber boot or something.

Thanks for the under the hood suggesiton, but I'm pretty certin its not there. BTW, when its idling and making the noise, it cannot be heard under the hood, only inside.
It's really hard to describe, but my first thought was a fan that was running but a bit misaligned and a blade ticking on something. But, I can't find a fan that runs all the time. It does not change in volume or "perceived rotational speed." Remember the sound an old mechancial speedo cable made right before it broke? Very similar, but I'm convinced it's some kind of running electric fan or motor. Paul :flag
I had a noise similar noise that drove me and the dealership nuts for 2 years,
Then one day I grabbed my visor to pull it down to block out the sun and the noise went away.
It was the mirror cover vibirating on the mirror frame in the visor. :)
I would still swear to this day it was in the dash if I hadn't found it in the visor. :smash: :smash:
Sounds like your fuel lines are grounding out on the firewall, some of the early cars had noisy pumps and the noise telegraphed through the fuel lines.
Put your hand on the lines and see if it's the same frequency as the noise you hear in the car.
