Default Mods Are Finally Installed (LGM headers, GHL Bullets, etc.)

WOOHOO! Planning/research finally succeeds!!!

BACKGROUND: My main goal at the start of this SAGA (separate discussion...ask offline and I'll give you the details) was to make my '02 MN6 daily driver coupe SOUND better. (I think a stinkin' Mustang has a better exhaust note than a C5 produced for the masses.) Then the C6 was unveiled and new C5 deals popped up all over the place. So, I started to consider whether I should I stick with my current daily driver C5, buy a Z06 or order a C6.

For various reasons, I decided to stay with my current coupe. However, I changed gears somewhere in the process. Not only would I upgrade the exhaust, but I'd go whole-hog and do the air intake and engine as well. The new goal was not just to improve exhaust sound/flow, but to take my coupe's performance to a better-than-Z06 level while still keeping it a good daily driver. I did tons of reading and asking for opinions...LGM rose to the top of the list with most people for headers. Listened to lots of mufflers--Borla, Corsa, Flowmaster, Magnaflow. GHLs sounded real nice! Decided to go with both the LGMs and GHLs as my main mods. IMHO, they both made a world of difference for the end result.

Now, for the details.

SHOP: South Georgia Corvette, Inc., Thomasville, GA (http://www.sgvette.com)

MODS: LGM Longtube Headers w/ X-pipe and Random Cats; GHL Quad-tip Bullets, CNC ported LS1 heads, Comp Cams cam, Comp Cams 2.02 1.60 valves, spring w/ titanium retainers, BBP Vortex intake, redesigned thermostat, Bosch Platinum plugs, MSD wires, tuned computer...and "tastefully" lowered. (Also did an oil change, installed a new fuel filter and repainted the brake rotor hats.)

MEASURABLE RESULTS: Before (Stock setup) - 318.6 rwhp, 343.9 ft/lb torque; AFTER (Mods) - 398.6 rwhp, 395.7 ft/lb torque. C6-Z06...Ha!

UNMEASURABLE RESULTS: Increased kick-in-the-butt performance; car looks/sounds great (the GHLs are awesome with this set-up! They really rip the air to shreds at WOT. :D

FIRST REACTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC: I picked up a GA State Trooper "escort" on Rt 319 coming back from Thomasville (the Moultrie to Tifton section before I-75). :leaving: He had just finished writing a ticket for someone else, then caught up to and kept me company for a while...@ 55 mph, of course...and until he found someone in the opposite direction not going 55 mph. :jester Also, I must of surprised a couple of kids in an Altima with the sound when I got onto the interstate--they really snapped their heads around to look at what was coming up the ramp next to them and making all that wunnaful noise!

POSTSCRIPT: Despite some problems caused by a thankfully now FORMER employee @ LGM, Austin and LouG (a.k.a. CF "LG Motorsports") came through big time with the headers. Props also to GHL (Brian a.k.a. CF "GHL") via Extreme Motorsports (Bill Reid a.k.a. CF "Bill Reid") for the mufflers and Aaron Scott of SGVette (highly recommended! :yesnod: ) for the install.

Special thanks also to the rest of the LGM crew (Karen, Chris & Jeremy a.k.a. CF "Godspeed") for help with my shipment, Andy of A&A Corvette (a.k.a. CF "Andy@AandACorvette ") for LG header advice and help, Al Hemstreet, fellow CLCG member (http://www.corvetteclubcentralga.org) for the SGVette reference, as well as all the Corvette Forum members who chimed in with advice or "encouragement" on how to indulge my "mod fever." Hopefully the word "modification" stays out of my vocabulary for a while!  :seeya

Chris

Glad everything worked well together. Watch out for those I-95 cops. I got too many coming out of Fla. Had to get to those great fishing spots in Ga.

Tom,

No problem...I'll plan on making the ride happen the next time I get up to the ATL area for another PSP event and/or mod day. (Doesn't look it'll happen though @ this coming weekend's (?) mod day. I'll have to see about that.)

Later! :seeya

Brian
Brian,

Thanks for the comments. Believe it or not, the only time I've been pulled over was by a NM state trooper just S. of Corona, NM. He was coming over the hill; I was coming up the hill doing 75 in a 55 zone (2-lane rd.) Radar detector never went off until he crested--he had me dead-to-rights (lights went on immediately). :( So I pulled over and waited for him to turn around and begin the "interview." Guess what? He let me go w/ a warning! :D

So far, the worst states/areas for troopers I've seen (other than the one you mentioned) are between Dallas and San Antonio, TX, I-95 in VA, the Jersey Turnpike, the GA-SC border on I-20 and here around the Warner Robins / Macon, GA area. For some reason the cops in GA like to set up in groupings I call "wolf packs". One will spot "violators" while others will wait to pick them up a bit down the road. After all, ya can't outrun a radio! :jester

FYI, to get a look-see at a guy(s) and/or gal(s) who really stick it to some cops, see vid related to "Mr. X" at http://www.getawayinstockholm.com/ . Vol. 4 of the series features a C5. (Think of the movie "Triple X" and what Vin Diesel's character did before he got into the spy business and you'll have an idea of what to somewhat expect in the vids. No launching 'Vettes off a bridge though. :nonod: )

Later! :seeya :steering:

Finally got some vids pulled down and semi-edited. They're not the best shots in the world, but they'll give you an idea about what the whole thing sounds like and does. Still no substitute for personally being there though. This setup really rips the air when at WOT!

Idle from the back end: http://home.earthlink.net/~cmstim/c5mods_idlepipes.wmv

Idle from w/ the hood up: http://home.earthlink.net/~cmstim/c5..._enginebay.wmv

Reving the engine: http://home.earthlink.net/~cmstim/c5mods_revs.wmv

Quick Launch: http://home.earthlink.net/~cmstim/c5mods_launch.wmv
Note: Hesitation in mid run was due to the SUV poping into my field of view

Note: I plan on deleting the vids in about a week or so.

Later!

The numbers he posted are STD corrected. Most people tend to use SAE corrected numbers. The STD correction will give a little higher numbers.

I'm not knocking his numbers, he got great gains, just wanted people to be able to compare apples to apples.
