Well, after a lot of lurking around the forum and a great deal of research I decided to take the plung and do a "CAM only" install in my '04 C5 and upgrade a few components in the valvetrain as well!
Goals: Smooth/stock-like idle, pass emissions tests, use stock LS1 heads, easy on valvetrain, achieve significant performance gains and provide foundation for future install of an Intercooled MagnaCharger.
I'm looking forward to experiencing the results of this project. I'm having the work done by BSM Performance for $625, plus tuning, and should be done in one day. My goal is to reach the 400 hp and tq threshold. Should be close.
:hurray:
Re: Going for it! Cam only install on a 2004 C5 (AlohaC5)
Good luck. I just did it on my 99. I went with a bigger cam but yours should be perfect with the stock heads. I haven't had mine tuned yet (I'm still installing the Kooks headers/cats/x pipe). Sounds like you got a great price for the install also. Good luck and you won't be dissapointed. Chris.
Re: Going for it! Cam only install on a 2004 C5 (Fastbasser)
[QUOTE]I am having a larger cam, headers, catbacks and an LS6 intake installed and expect alot less than 400 hp..
That is unless you are reffering to the hp at the flywheel instead of the rear wheels...
BTW... $625 pus tuning???? Something is up.....The parts cost more than that..
:steering: QUOTE]
I already have all the parts. The $625 is for labor only. I'm already at 340 hp and 360 tq. This cam will probably give me an increase of 40 hp/tq after tuning. I will post the results.
Re: Going for it! Cam only install on a 2004 C5 (AlohaC5)
Sounds like a good cam for street driving. If you are hoping to hit 400 rwhp I would look into a more aggresive cam. I have a 230/224 in my car it it has good street manners. Good luck with the project. Post some results when you are finished. Kaley
Re: Going for it! Cam only install on a 2004 C5 (2C5only21)
That will be a nice mild street set-up. I did a few months research before I pulled the trigger as well -- Good luck.
I am curious as to why you did not opt for one of the larger "emission friendly" cams that work great with stock heads & single drop in (low/no maintenance) springs?

While I can appreciate your excitement I think your expectations are a bit lofty..to believe that a cam only and a dyno tune will get you to 400 RWHP..is a stretch IMHO:rolleyes:
You need to remember that your now introducing a new performance component to an otherwise stock engine. You will need other components to get the potential power from the cam..To begin with...You REALLY need to think about letting the engine breathe.. :yesnod: A set of Long Tube headers and a cold air intake will do wonders for the engines overall performance....Just my .02..BUT I'v ebeen there and done that over the last 3 years and I just don't want to see you disapointed and not get the results your aiming for...

I see you went with the 222 vs. the 220. I could have gone either way except the advertising from Texas Speed & Performance and Speed, Inc. for the 220 cam specs state "emissions friendly", but the larger 222+ didn't state that. Since I'm moving to Virginia where they take emissions testing serious I didn't want to take a chance.
