Default Biggest cam for stock bottom end?

As can be seen from my sig I have all the bolt-ons. I am looking for ideas on a selecting a cam. I will probably do a cam only at first, then go with a set of AFR's later. My question is, what would be the biggest cam I can go with without notching the pistons? Also, should I change out my lifters when I put in the new springs and stuff? I'd also like to transfer the springs and things to the new heads when I get them. Any ideas?  :smash:

I would recommend a CompXer 224/224 114 or 112 lsa cam. I know a guy Sean who had an 04 Z06, that Cam and a Vararam that ran 11.4 on MT ETs in the 1/4. I am running the cam and so have many others. It is a good cam that will pass smog and only lopes a little..but the steep ramp rates of the Xer Lobe allow it to make great midrange power rpm range to 6500rpms..change your valve springs to a set of Rev1116 or Comp dual springs. The LS1 heads flow good enough for this cam. You would benefit more with it if you had Stage II heads but it would still work well.

See my sig.
that is the biggest you can run in a Z06 without cutting the pistons. I am not sure if you could go bigger on an LS1 or not but, I don't think you would want anything bigger than the G5X3 anyway.

Z06uffrad2002 is correct. However to get the G5x3 (which is a killer cam) to work with stock heads without flycutting the cam has to be ordered on a 114lsa otherwise you must cut. Also, when you swap to an aftermarket head you most likely will have to flycut then also. I say GO FOR IT as that cam is making big power with stoch heads as evidenced by the 426RWHP put down with Z06ufgrad on his stock LS6 headed Z06! The springs should be reusable no probem if you have low miles on them and they are still in good shape if an when you swap heads. Of course, get the best DUAL springs to use that requrie no machining of stock heads, i.e-COMP 921s, as the x3 is a very aggressive cam and you will need the best springs for peace of mind! :chevy

I really dont see why everyone has a problem with flycutting pistons.

I don't have a problem with it at all. But for now, I just want to do a cam, then heads. To flycut the pistons, I would have to take the motor out, then remove the pistons, then re-install. Should probably re-do main bearings and caps at that point, then I should resize the con rods, etc. When I do that, I'm doing a stroker and will do a forged rotating assembly. I'm trying to keep it simple for now...

I don't know how accurate they are but there is a way to cut your pistons without removing the motor. I seen it on one of the tuners web site. I dont think I would take that route though.

Ya you dont have to take the motor out to do the pistons. It isnt that involved.

I say go with a big enough cam that when you do heads, you dont want to switch to a bigger cam.

Kumar, that is exactly why I am posting here. I'm trying to find out the best way to do it. WideopenC5 showed me a way to do it with the pistons still in there. I'd really like to go with a T-Rex cam. Talked to Chris at Thunder about it and he told me aftermarket heads won't work with it cause I won't get pv clearance unless I cut them. Does anybody know of a tool, actually I'd need 2 1 for intake, the other for exhaust I could use? If I could find a flycutter mounted on a shaft that would fit my valve guides, I could set a depth collar on it and cut them through the valve guide... Now it's getting interesting.

There are ways to cut a stock valve (notch the edges) to use as a flycutting tool. Its tedious work, but after you have your "custom valve", you slide it through the head, put two bolts in the head to make sure it is alligned right, and turn the crank to bring the piston on that cylinder up. Put the visible end of the notched valve in a drill and cut a bit. Take the head off, meaure, and do it again untill the notching is complete. Keep in mind, there are much easier ways, such as buying the isky piston notching tool.

Hope this helps.

I would say a 244/244 59X/59X 114 would be good.:)

ISKY has a flycutting tool I belive for that purpose. Might want to pm "kechme" as he is a sponsor and they have used that tool many times.
