One of my friends has a 03 Z06 and wants to go drag racing with it. He plans on adding h/c and 3.90 gears. He wants to know how much rwhp can the stock rear end and tranny hold before braking. And what are you guys doing to make your 6-spd stronger at the track? In other words he knows that racing is a risk when you have 450 + rwhp, but what are you guys doing to make it all stay together.
Transmission: Doesn't really like being powershifted to much. Upgrade the fluid to a good synthetic Redline or Amsoil. Crashed94 builds an upgraded MN12. Hardened Carbon Fiber synchros for 1-2 and a steel 3-4 shift fork are common upgrades. However the stock tranny seems to be very stout.
The big culprit is the rear diff and flex between the transmission and differential caused by high HP and using very sticky tires at launch. Have your friend contact DTE about their diffs and transmission/diff brace.
Transmissions are rated by torque not horsepower. the M12is a fairly strong trannie and can handle some serious Modding. Unles he is going to get into hardcore 1/4's with slicks and a rear end, he should be ok
Don't forget that Joe C broke his passenger side output shaft in his 3.73s on like their first or second pass with maybe headers and drag radials in his '01 ragtop. You already have enough power and torque to break stuff if you can hook hard.
If he was *really* your friend you'd suggest an A4 swap. :jester
Drag radials tend to break more parts than Et Streets. I would a put a hardened shaft in the rear, and a gear and call it a day. Thats all we have in the car I am driving right now, and I launch it at 6600-6800. It makes 500RWHP, and so far looks pretty good.
I have heard that drag radials break more parts than ET streets, but does this only refer to the 18" BF drag radials or is this common with all drag radials? A smaller diameter would appear to have more sidewall and more flex. ET streets are 16". So is a 16" drag radial comparable to a 16 "ET street.
Just curious
Thanks
Chris
I was speaking with someone at Lingenfelter and he said the stock Z06 tranny is very strong. I was going to get a supercharger on my car before I decided to be smart and get a house. :smash: He said the only thing I would need to upgrade was my clutch.
