What do you mean by "broke down"? What specific error codes did you get? What other mods do you have and what headers did you install?
You may simply be able to replace them. Removing the cats is not necessary.
Also, if you have a scan tool, you should check your O2 sensors. The graph of an O2 typically looks like an EKG during a heart attack. Lots of up/down scribble over time. If your sensor is not working, the graph will have far fewer up/down movement.
Bank1 Sensor 1 is driver's side closest to the engine. Bank 1 Sensor 2 is driver side after your cat. Bank 2 is the passenger side.
You may just have a bad O2 or it has been corrupted. They are easy to replace. Just a unplug the weatherpack and use a wrench to remove.
It is very important that on installation you do not crimp or twist the wires. The O2's have some "special" wiring that has some type of reference point of oxygen. It is explained in the wiring section of the manuals if you have them.
There is a link on this page that shows pics of damaged O2 sensors. Definitely compare your old one to these pics, as it may indicate a bigger problem.
don't touch the end of of 02, with your hands, when you install them. i just bought 4 news one for my 1998 i don't think they cost that much. about 190 bucks for bosch replacements. thats was for all of them.
