Re: COLUMN LOCK FIXED BUT WARNING WHEN BATTERY LOW ? (Oldvetter)
IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE COLUMN LOCK FAILURE WHEN BATTERY IS LOW, C5'S ALSO HAD THE BATTERY ISSUES WITH ACID LEAKING FROM THEM. ALOT OF GUYS MAY NOT EVEN KNOW THIS IS HAPPENING. I HAD COLUMN LOCK PROBLEMS WHEN MY BATTERY STARTED TO FAIL. REPLACED IT WITH AN OPTIMA AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. NOT SURE IF THIS HELPS.
Re: COLUMN LOCK FIXED BUT WARNING WHEN BATTERY LOW ? (Oldvetter)
A friend of mine had his 2000 C5 MN6 column lock fixed by GM Dealer, but when his battery got low (needed jumped), the column lock warning came back.
Has this happened to anyone else? He had dealer reset code. Could he have reset this code himself using the DIC ?
yes a low battery charge can cause a column lock since voltage is required to move the column lock to register an unlocked state. yes you can clear the code yourself just pull fuse 25 under the passenger side footwell for 30 sec. will clear the code and in some instances also unock the column, your safest bet is to get the column bypass :seeya
Re: COLUMN LOCK FIXED BUT WARNING WHEN BATTERY LOW ? (lostsoulny)
Thanks for the hint! I just pulled my car out of winter storage this weekend and while the battery was fine just three weeks ago when I went to get something out of the car, the battery was fully dead. Once the car was jumped, I got the column lock message and the wheel was locked up. I shut the car off and then rejumped the car to get it started and then the wheel was unlocked but still had the message. After putting about 50 miles on the car, and resetting the DIC message by just hitting RESET, the message was removed. Once I restarted the car, the message came back but the wheel was not locked up. This continued to happen through out the day. The car started on it's own now with not even a hesitation.
I will try pulling the fuse to see if it resets the computer and permanently removes the message.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Jumping the car is an OK way to get it running if you need to drive it right away. But After the battery has run down, it should be charged back up to full capacity. Driving it (or running the engine) for an extended period of time will do that (at the expense of working the heck out of your alternator), but putting a charger on it for a long slow recharge is best.
