Default Roller Rockers, is there any gains from using them?

I'm building my frist 427. I wanted to know if any one has been getting any gains from using roller rockers. I don't have the stock ones so I have to buy some. I was offered new Yella Terra 1.7 for 350. If not them what would you buy? Thanks

I've been looking at the "new and improved" stock rockers from Fichtner...anyone using them? They are reasonable priced, and were redesigned from the original ones.

Throttle response is better and I don't know about them other than crane i used the 1.88's on my H/C motor and had good gains, the cam was larger in my stroker so I have their 1.72's--the kits also come with the good studs and pushrods etc so the overall package is a good one to have and probably 5rwhp on the same size just from removing friction from the equation--

While we're discusing rocker arms, is it worthwhile to go to a high ratio roller rocker on a stock motor to get a little more lift and duration without having to get much into the engine???

If you're not planning on a getting a monster cam anytime soon, and are planning to keep the engine internals stock you might as well go the higher ratio and get a few extra horsepower (10 hp seems to be the average gain).
The only problem with increasing your ratio is that you have to get better springs if your engine is an LS1. The LS6 springs are fine, but the LS1's are weak. Either way better rockers, push rods, and springs will provide extra horsepower, and will also allow you to increase your rev limiter without having to worry about your valvetrain.

Got a link to these? I've just now heard about this, and I'd like to see what you're talking about.

I don't have a link, you can go the Fichtner website though and use this part number....10214664. That is the old part number but it was upgraded in April of 2003. They had a great price on them too....about $15 a piece. Unless I can find something that is a LOT better for a reasonable price, I will probably go with these. JMO....

That's cool. Thanks for the info. Any idea on what was 'upgraded'?

So back to the orginal question. Is it worth the extra money for the better Roller Rockers or just buy these $240 for the Fichtner or $350 for the Yella Terra

I did a search of the archives a couple weeks ago about roller rockers to see what was what from others here. General consensus was they are not really worth it. Lot of money for very little power. The only issue I can think of with high ratio rockers is the eventual side loading of the valve guides. It seems that a slightly larger cam cost about the same amount of money as R'R's. But R'R's are easier to DIY.

I've been trying to figure out the best path on this.....the original rockers were prone to coming apart with needle bearings getting loose in the engine...for that reason alone since I am doing a H/C job I will replace them with the better design. I can't find any data to support an increase in HP commensurate with the cost of YTs or others at this HP level....just my opinion once again of course.

As you can see, I did have a breakdown on the stock rockers, but I still feel strongly that this was at least at minimum due to the Disasster MMS shortblock replacement which they agreed to replace after they blew my engine on their dyno. Yes, they replaced the shortblock, but just re-attached my original heads. These may have been damaged when they blew the motor at ??? 7,500 rpm??? ( who knows)
One half of the exhaust valve stems were worn down badly, and were in my view the root cause of this failure. I have removed the heads and sent them to TPIS for evaluation / replacement.

I have darn near inspected and or replaced all the MMS parts that they had installed. This I believe may be the last time bomb I have to deal with.

After evaluating this, as of now, I still plan to replace them with another set of stock rockers. ( I have a .566" lift cam). LPE has many motors out there with +550 rwhp using these stock rockers.

Thanks for the input, Bruce....the conclusion I have reached is that the (new and improved) stock rocker will be fine for MY application (stg II heads, 224 cam). I'm sure that more expensive roller rockers would do better at a higher rpm and gain a few more HP but for a street driven car with the mods as above I don't see that the gains for roller or roller shaft rockers are worth the cost.

The higher the lift, the more concerned I would be. But with the 224 cam (same as mine) with .566" lift, I have been told the stock rockers can do the job. If you replaced them, the only gain other than maybe 2-3 HP, would be a higher quality and more durable rocker. IMO.

What do you think about using the stock rockers with my cam...224 with .581 lift?

I only can tell you my personal history with a .566" lift.
If I were you, I would ask the people at LPE for more information on this.
I know they have history to draw on.
