Can a knock sensor go bad without throwing any codes?
Hi,
I think that my Y2K A4 pings under load from approx 2000 rpms in any gear. I'm not getting any codes at all.
I'm using the highest octane fuel available here in CA and have decarbed my car in the last month without making any difference in the pinging, but the car does seem to run a few degrees cooler after the decarb.
Is it possible for my knock sensors to go bad but not set off any codes?

Yes, I have the same problem. There is a TSB regarding water corrosion of the back sensor (there are two). The TSB details sensor replacement and that a bead of silicone sealer must be added around the perimeter of the new sensor. I don't know the TSB #, but I found it on the Corvette Action Center website.

Yes, mine was replaced under this TSB... there was a flaw that would allow oil to cover the knock sensor.

Hi Stan,
I have that TSB and I suspect that's my problem. The TSB says that "the technician mayfind DTC P0332 set". I'm trying to confirm whether it's possible for my knock sensor to be bad even though I'm not getting a P0332.
Re: Can a knock sensor go bad without throwing any codes? (gazumi)
that TSB refers to people who use water to wash their engines and necessitates not only replacement of the sensor but the construction of a "Dam of RTV" Around the sensor. so if the sensor was replaced and the Dam part was not done, it could very well be bad again.....Just My 00.02 cents :smash:

Thanks for all the replies. I have only had the car for a couple of months so I don't know if the knock sensor was ever replaced. I suspect that I need to replace it but I need to make sure I'm not doing it unneccessarily.
Question is - has anybody ever replaced a bad knock sensor that did NOT throw any codes? Is it possible that I have a bad knock sensor whithout getting any DIC trouble codes?

Did you get any codes on your car?
Thanks.
My Vette has never set any codes, but I have heard it ping bad sometimes with no knock retard (I monitored KR with my AutoTap)... I'm going to replace/fix mine when I replace the heads. Let us know how yours turns out.
