Default Headlight Issues...Info Needed

**EDIT...UPDATE...SOLUTION 04-22-04 - The issue described below was solved by replacing the headlight switch on the steering column. The switch cost me about $150 for the part plus shipping from rockauto.com I also replaced it without having to remove the steering wheel. The headlight control module was found to be working just fine.** :hurray:

I know another headlight post...I have done the search for information but didn't read much useful.

1998 Coupe

Here's the symptoms of my current issue:
-Both Lights will not pop up or down.
-Headlights do not illuminate (Closed or Open)

History of problem:
-For about the last year lights would illuminate, and occationally take several turns of the headlight switch to pop up.

Things I have done so far and observations:
-Disconnected and reconnected battery
-Cleaned battery connections
-Tried different battery
-Checked breaker in interior fuse box with test light and verified headlight switch caused the power to switch on and off at the breaker...tested breaker...ok
-During process of disconnecting battery...power cycled on/off/on which caused headlights to raise or lower dependant on what position the headlight switch was currently in.

I believe from reading previous posts that the headlight control module may need to be replaced.

Is there anyway of testing this module or is there any other relays that are common to both headlights?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know if you can test that module, but one other thought is the switch itself. I have read numerous posts of people having to replace the entire switch assembly as it has a bit of a history failing.

Good Luck

Leave the headlight control module alone. It's fine. What you have is a broken wire in the headlight/turn signal switch assembly. You need to trace out the broken wire or replace the switch assembly. (the wiring harness and switch assembly are made together)

I had a similiar sounding problem with my 2000 about 3 yrs ago. With the switch on, the hi-beams would light when I pulled the lever (flash-to-pass). Lo-beams were not lit and the lights were in the down position. I took it to the dealer, under warranty, and they had to replace the BCM. No problems since.

I had no prior intermittent problems before this happened.

Good luck.

Tom/David...I will check the switch wiring...can you get to it without removing the steering wheel? Do you have a wiring schmatic?

Don...quote "With the switch on, the hi-beams would light when I pulled the lever (flash-to-pass)." Mine does this also...BCM...hummm...that would suck $$$. Car is Out of Warranty.

:iagree: I've read many posts about the switch failing. You can find links to the schematics here.

Good Luck
